Staten Island FerryHawks News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - Staten Island capped the franchise's first homestand with an 8-3 loss at the hands of Gastonia Monday morning at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park. The Honey Hunters scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, sending the FerryHawks to (5-6) through their first 11 home games in their inaugural campaign.
For the sixth time this season, Staten Island struck first, plating one run in the first inning. After FerryHawks RHP Dakota Freese worked around a one-out single from Jack Reinheimer, former Major Leaguer Randell Delgado took the bump for Gastonia in his Atlantic League debut. He was greeted by a one-out hustle double from Alfredo Reyes - his first hit as a
FerryHawk. After Reyes stole third base, Angel Aguilar pushed him home on a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Staten Island a 1-0 lead.
Freese would retire seven straight Honey Hunters after the Reinheimer single, but a two-out rally in the third inning allowed Gastonia to grab a lead they'd never give up. After striking out Stuart Levy and Eric Jones, Freese plunked Johnny Davis on his first offer. After a walk to Reinheimer, Joseph Rosa delivered a two-run double to push Gastonia in front 2-1.
Delgado, meanwhile, only faced seven more batters after the first inning and was yanked after tossing 2.2 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Michael Gunn (2-0) was first out of the bullpen for Gastonia and maintained the Honey Hunters one-run advantage by tossing two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
Freese (1-1) lasted five strong frames, allowing four earned runs after two more crossed in the sixth inning with Williams Ramirez on the mound in his FerryHawks debut.
Alex Katz replaced Ramirez to start the seventh inning, but he failed to complete the inning. In his fifth FerryHawks appearance the portsider recorded just one out and allowed three earned runs (all in the seventh inning) on three walks. Eric Mariñez, in his first game with Staten Island, got the FerryHawks out of the seventh inning - he threw 1.1 innings of no hit and no run baseball.
Trailing 7-1 entering the home half of the seventh, Staten Island scratched across another run whilst working against reliver Sam Bordner. Joseph Monge started the inning with a single, before being pushed to second on a walk by Ben Ruta. After Reyes grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, Aguilar was back at the dish with Monge on third. His single would score Monge to make it a 7-2 game and earn him a team-best 11th RBI.
After a 50-minute weather delay in the top of the eighth inning, the
FerryHawks would plate one final run in the home half of the frame. Onas Farfan, the fifth of six pitchers used by the Honey Hunters, quickly earned the first two outs working against Mariel Bautista and Ricardo Cespedes. With two outs, Bryan Gonzalez provided a pinch-hit single in his first
FerryHawks at bat, before back-to-back walks to Brandon Wagner and Monge loaded the bases for Ruta. The leadoff man delivered with a single to score Gonzalez, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
An Eric Jones RBI double in the ninth inning pushed the lead back to five for the Honey Hunters, taking the Monday morning series finale by an 8-3 final.
Rodriguez allowed two runs on six hits across his four innings. He struck out three and walked two in his fourth-ever professional baseball start.
Staten Island (5-15) hits the road Tuesday to kickstart its rivalry with North Division foe Long Island at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. RHP Matt Solter gets the ball for the FerryHawks against a Ducks pitcher to be named. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 with the FerryHawks Pregame Show starting at 6:20 PM on the SI FerryHawks Youtube Stream.
Postgame Notes: The game lasted a season-high 3 Hours & 48 Minutes (Excluding the 50-Minute Delay)...Kacy Clemens extended his hitting streak to seven games...Angel Aguilar (2-for-4) recorded his team-best eighth multi-hit game of the season...Williams Ramirez and Eric Mariñez were the only FerryHawks pitcher not to allow a run (Both in their debuts)...
