New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

As he has done all season, Memphis left-hander John Gast kept the opposition off the scoreboard.

Gast shut out the New Orleans Zephyrs into the eighth inning on Tuesday night, extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18 innings to begin the season and the Redbirds blanked the Z's, 4-0.

Gast (2-0) needed just 74 pitches to cruise through the first seven innings of the game before tiring in the eighth, when Koyie Hill drew a leadoff walk and Jordan Brown singled to left, prompting Memphis manager Pop Warner to pull Gast from the game.

Eric Fornataro came out of the bullpen to retire Wilson Valdez on a lineout to left, but hit Gorkys Hernandez with a pitch to load the bases. Ed Lucas grounded into a fielder's choice, as Hill was forced out at the plate, and Sam Freeman was called upon to retire Bryan Petersen, who popped up the first pitch of the at-bat to end the threat.

Freeman retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the Redbirds' second shutout of the season.

Memphis handed Gast all the offense he needed in the third inning, scoring twice against Doug Mathis, who was making his first start of the season for New Orleans . Jermaine Curtis drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by J.R. Towles . With two outs, Kolten Wong laced a triple to left-center field, doubling the Redbirds' advantage to 2-0.

The Redbirds tacked on two more runs in the eighth, capitalizing on a throwing error by Nick Green. Ryan Jackson drove home the first run with a single to right, and Jermaine Curtis greeted Jonathan Albaladejo with a single up the middle to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Mathis (1-1) was charged with two runs in four innings and took the loss. He struck out five, walked three and allowed three hits.

The Zephyrs and Redbirds play the second game of the series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Jacob Turner will make the start for New Orleans, against Seth Maness .
