New York Boulders News Release
Garrett Cooper wasted no time in making a good impression during his New York Boulders debut Friday evening. The rookie, who was signed earlier in the day, struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn the save and secure a 7-6 win for the Boulders against the Joliet Slammers.
Joliet rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the game-tying run on third base with one out, but Cooper was able to thwart the Slammers' comeback hopes. The Boulders (7-5) won the three-game series with the victory, marking their third series win out of four to start the season.
New York jumped out to an early seven-run lead, anchored by a five-run inning in the fourth. Thomas Walraven had 'double' vision all game for the Boulders, finishing with three doubles and four RBI in the win. Giovanni Garbella, Tucker Nathans, and Matt McDermott each added one RBI for New York.
July Sosa earned the win after another sensational outing on the mound. The right-hander, who tied the franchise record for strikeouts in a game (12) during his last start, did not allow an earned run in seven innings.
Scott Holzwasser drove in two runs for the Slammers (6-6). Tyler Depreta-Johnson went 2 for 3 with one RBI in the loss. Andrew Dietz tossed four scoreless innings in relief for Joliet.
New York continues its road trip Friday, when they kick off a three-game series against the Schaumburg Boomers (5-4). While the Boulders are on the road, Clover Stadium is hosting the 2023 MAAC baseball championships all week.
