PEARL, MS -- The Atlanta Braves have signed free agent RHP Joe Gardner out of the Atlantic Independent League and assigned him to Double-A Mississippi. Gardner is scheduled to start tonight's game at Mobile. In corresponding moves, RHP Ryan Weber was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow strain, retroactive to August 18.

Gardner, 26, was signed by the Cubs and assigned to Double-A Tennessee in late May. In seven starts with the Smokies, he went 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA. He also appeared in eight games (seven starts) with the Independent Lancaster Barnstormers (3-2, 2.51) this season. Gardner was originally selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2009 draft out of UC Santa Barbara. He was traded to the Rockies in exchange for Ubaldo Jimenez in 2011. Gardner entered the 2014 season with a MiLB career record of 37-29 and a 3.87 ERA.

Weber, 24, was 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 32 games for the M-Braves this season. Weber has bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen throughout the season. In 19 relief appearances, he has a record of 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA compared to a 3-6 record and a 6.29 ERA in 13 starts. Weber posted his best numbers in May when he went 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA in eight games (one start). The Florida native was selected by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2009 draft out of St. Petersburg College.

The Mississippi roster has 23 active players and 9 disabled.
