Gant Wins FSL Pitcher of the Week Award

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 6, 2015) - Former St. Lucie Mets starting pitcher John Gant has been named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 29-July 5.

In a start last Monday at Tampa, Gant limited the Yankees to three hits in eight shutout innings. He walked only one batter and struck out 10, which was one off his season high.

Gant received a no-decision but the Mets went on to win the game 2-0 in 12 innings.

It was Gant's last start for St. Lucie. He was promoted to Double-A Binghamton on Sunday.

After spending all of 2014 in low-A Savannah, Gant skipped St. Lucie to start this season and began 2015 in Binghamton's rotation. After going 2-3 with 4.75 ERA in seven starts for the B-Mets, Gant was sent down to St. Lucie on June 4.

In Advanced-A Gant went 2-0 in six starts with a miniscule 1.79 ERA. He struck out a whopping 48 batters in 40.1 innings while walking only 10. His start against Tampa was enough for the Mets to send him back up.

Gant becomes the fifth St. Lucie Met to earn an FSL Player or Pitcher of the Week this season. Outfielder Michael Conforto was named Player of the Week twice. Robert Gsellman was named Pitcher of the Week in early May. Conforto and Gsellman were promoted to Double-A at the end of May. Current Mets first baseman Dominic Smith was named Player of the Week in early June.

The Mets return to Tradition Field on Tuesday to start a three-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets on www.stluciemets.com, over the phone by calling 772-871-2115 or in person at the Tradition Field box office.
