Gamel, Bullpen Outlast Augusta in 14

AUGUSTA, GA - Ben Gamel beat out an RBI infield single in the 14th inning to propel the Charleston RiverDogs past the Augusta GreenJackets 4-3 on Monday night in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

With the victory, Charleston has taken three out of four to improve to 60-52 (21-24 in the second half). Augusta falls to 53-60 (21-23 in the second half).

The rally that led to the go-ahead run started with a single by Eduardo Sosa off Andrew Berger (0-3). Sosa then moved to second on an error and took third on a double play. That brought up Gamel, who provided the base hit to break the deadlock. Nick Goody (1-1) tossed a scoreless 12th and 13thto earn his first professional victory. Not to be outdone, Fred Lewis fired shutout ball in the 14th for his first professional save.

The RiverDogs got off to a great start in the first, as they grabbed a quick 2-0 lead. Ali Castillo and Cito Culver singled to start the game and good baserunning put them on second and third with nobody out. Consecutive groundouts brought both runners across with the game's first runs.

The score remained unchanged for the next three innings as Charleston's Matt Bashore and Augusta's Clayton Blackburn matched zeroes. Blackburn faltered again in the fifth, as Gamel knocked an RBI single into left to put the RiverDogs up by three.

Coming off consecutive losses, Bashore had everything working for him this time. He gave up only up three hits in five innings, didn't walk a batter and struck out six. Bashore finished off his night by getting a double play to end the fifth and then turned things over to the bullpen.

Unfortunately for Charleston, new pitcher Ben Paullus did not have the same success as their starter. In the seventh, Augusta used three consecutive extra base hits to tie the game. Devin Harris knocked in the first two runs by hammering one over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the year and second in as many days. Jose Flores then tripled and he scored on a Brett Krill double to level the game at 3-3, where it would stay until the 14th.

After a day off, the RiverDogs will host the Hagerstown Suns for four games, starting on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. They will throw RHP Philip Wetherell (5-5, 6.22 ERA) in the first game against RHP Taylor Hill (9-6, 5.00 ERA). Law Enforcement Appreciation Night will welcome fans back to The Joe, as local law enforcement agencies will receive free tickets. Everyone at the game who is 65 or older will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, soda and chips on Senior Wednesday.
