Asheville Tourists News Release
With final preparations for the national conventions of the Republican and Democratic parties being made in Tampa and Charlotte, respectively, the Asheville Tourists will employ the ever-popular bobblehead to determine which way baseball fans in the Land of the Sky are leaning in the upcoming presidential election.
On Saturday, August 18, fans entering McCormick Field will have the opportunity to "vote" by selecting a bobblehead of either President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney. The Tourists will have 500 bobbleheads of each candidate, and the first one to have all of his bobbleheads claimed will be declared the winner as well as the recipient of the team's "electoral votes."
The Tourists will be hosting "Bobblection" in conjunction with sponsors 880 The Revolution and News Radio 570. That same evening, the Tourists will host the Greenville Drive at 6:05 p.m., with gates and "the polls" opening at 5:05 p.m.
During the contest, the Tourists will wear special red, white and blue "United" jerseys that were designed by a local student as part of United Federal Credit Union's Extra Credit Challenge Program. The jerseys will be auctioned following the game, with the proceeds benefiting Mission Children's Hospital.
"The great thing about baseball is it represents America without being political," said Tourists president Brian DeWine. "We can have fun and choose our favorite bobblehead for president. As they say, 'As goes the Bobblehead, so goes the Nation!'"
The Tourists conclude their current homestand with a 7:05 p.m. game on Monday evening against the Savannah Sand Gnats. After a four-game series at Hickory, the team will return to McCormick Field on Monday, August 13, for a seven-game homestand against Charleston and Greenville. To purchase tickets or for more information, contact the Tourists' front office at (828) 258-0428.
