Game Recap: Garteig Shines as Wings Grind out Divisional Victory

December 21, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- Michael Garteig turned in a 37-save performance as he led the Kalamazoo Wings over the Indy Fuel by a 2-1 margin during a defensive-minded affair at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Wednesday.

Earning a power play at the 0:00 mark of the first period, Kalamazoo made Indy pay for their lack of discipline. Setting up around the perimeter, Jon Jutzi fed Kyle Bushee, who hammered a one-timer towards the goal. Bushee's shot was tipped in front by Justin Taylor and sailed into the top of the goal for his team-leading 12th of the year. Taylor's goal was the 149th of his K-Wings' career and moved him past Neil Meadmore ('79-'86) for fifth all-time in career goals scored with the franchise.

Similar to the first period, the Wings needed less than two minutes to tally in the middle frame. Moving up the ice on an odd-man-rush, Mackenze Stewart received a pass from Lane Scheidl and flung a shot to the goal. Stewart's first shot was saved by Etienne Marcoux, but he chased his rebound into the left wing and punched the second effort into the goal for his first of the season.

Before the period came to a close, Indy controlled the play and were rewarded for their efforts. Alex Wideman handled the puck at the high slot area and fired a perfectly-placed wrist shot over the glove of Garteig and just under the bar. The late-period goal sent the teams into the second intermission with Kalamazoo gripping a 2-1 lead.

The third period was a defensive standoff between the two clubs as the Wings tightened up on the back end and withstood each and every effort that the Fuel threw their way. With Marcoux on the bench for an extra attacker, a series of blocked shots by Kalamazoo skaters and saves by Garteig propelled the Wings into the final buzzer with the one-goal victory.
