Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
***Please note that for the first game of the double header, the IronBirds will be the home team, as the two teams are playing the makeup game from the 7/3 postponement at Ripken Stadium.***
Cyclones Take Series Finale, 7-0
The Aberdeen IronBirds fell short in their attempt at a sweep of the Brooklyn Cyclones yesterday afternoon, falling 7-0. The IronBirds managed just two hits against Cyclones pitchers Carlos Valdez and Gaither Bumgardner. Austin Pfeiffer led off the third inning with a single and Federico Castagnini led off the 5th inning with a double. Following Casgtagnini's base hit, the final 15 IronBirds' hitters were retired in order to close out the game. On the mound, Matthew Grimes took the loss for Aberdeen. He pitched two innings of relief, allowing four hits and three runs (all earned), with one strikeout. Nigel Nootbaar also pitched a pair of innings, allowing six hits and four runs (all earned), striking out two.
Gonzalez' Streak Snapped
With an 0-4 day at the plate, Jay Gonzalez saw his nine game hitting streak come to an end yesterday. It was the first time that he failed to record a hit since he went 0-3 on June 27th against the Hudson Valley Renegades. In his five game hitting streak, he recorded at least two hits in every game, including a 4-5 night on July 2nd at home against the Staten Island Yankees.
Island Hopping...From Coney to Staten
Yesterday, the IronBirds played the Cyclones at MCU Park for the final time this season. Aberdeen traveled the short 13 miles to Staten Island where they will play a double header today and the season series finale tomorrow. The IronBirds will not see the Yankees the rest of the season following tomorrow night's contest.
Home Cooking
After the next three games, the IronBirds' July schedule sets up quite favorably. Beginning with the July 9th home game against the Batavia Muckdogs, 14 of their next 20 games are at Ripken Stadium. They have three games against the Muckdogs and Auburn Doubledays, followed by an off day and a six game road trip. Aberdeen has a record-tying eight game home stand from July 22nd-29th, when the Cyclones, Connecticut Tigers, and Tri-City ValleyCats come to town.
On the Mound tonight...
In game one tonight, the IronBirds will be sending out RHP Janser Severino. He is 0-1 on the season with a 2.45 ERA. LHP Augey Bill will get the start in game two. He is 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA. Bill will be making his first appearance since June 27th.
