Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Staten Island, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds and Staten Island Yankees split a double header, with the Yankees walking off winners in game one, 3-2, and the IronBirds taking game two, 4-1.

In the first game, the Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the third on a Nathan Mikolas home run, followed a few batters later by a Ty McFarland bases loaded RBI single.

With the Yankees leading 2-0 heading to the fifth inning, the IronBirds got their offense going. Federico Castagnini was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Riley Palmer followed with a single. After an Oswill Lartiguez sacrifice bunt that moved Castagnini to third and Palmer to second, Austin Pfeiffer hit a ground ball to third that scored Castagnini, making it 2-1 Yankees. Austin Anderson then followed with a bouncer up the middle that scored Palmer, tying the game at two apiece.

The Yankees would get three consecutive singles with two outs in the top of the seventh and walked off winners, 3-2.

In the night cap, the IronBirds got back-to-back doubles from Jay Gonzalez and Austin Anderson, and it allowed Gonzalez to score. Anderson would score a few batters later when Austin Pfeiffer would draw a bases loaded walk, making it 2-0 IronBirds heading to the bottom of the third.

Aberdeen would double their lead in the fifth when Hector Veloz followed a Riley Palmer single with a home run to left field, making it 4-0 IronBirds.

Staten Island would get a run in the bottom of the sixth, when Chris Breen stroked a ground rule double to left field, scoring Luis Torrens. It made the score 4-1, and that would end up being the final.

Augey Bill was fantastic in the second game. He got the start and went four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk (and they came to back-to-back batters in the 3rd), striking out one. Dariel Delgado earned the win, pitching one inning in relief.

The IronBirds and Yankees will finish the series tomorrow evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
