Spinners Stop Skid at Three, 6-3

BURLINGTON, VT - The Lowell Spinners scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and on in the seventh en route to a 6-3 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday night at Centennial Field.
The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Spinners and evened their record at 12-12 on the season.
Vermont (9-15) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning. After two quick outs, Ben McQuown singled and Joe Bennie followed with a single of his own. A wild pitch moved both men into scoring position and back-to-back walks to brought home McQuown to give the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (12-12) would answer in the top half of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run by Jordan Betts, his team-leading fourth of the season. Back-to-back singles by Nick Longhi and Franklin Guzman would follow and a one-out single by Nick Moore loaded the bases, but David Sopilka grounded into a double play to end the inning with the game tied at one.
The Spinners would take the lead for good in the fifth, this time on a Danny Mars leadoff home run, his first as a professional. After two quick outs, Betts worked a walk and Longhi followed with a double to right, scoring Betts and extending the lead to 3-1.
Lowell would pad their lead in the sixth and seventh, this time without the benefit of the long ball. In the sixth, back-to-back one out singles by Moore and Sopilka got things started. After Mars grounded into a force out, Raymel Flores doubled to left, scoring Moore and a wild pitch brought home Mars to push the lead to 5-1. In the seventh, in what should have been a 1-2-3 inning, Guzman reached on a third strike throwing error and came around to score on a Sopilka RBI single.
The Lake Monsters would plate single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but Carlos Pinales pitched around a pair of singles in the ninth, striking out the final two to pick up his league leading seventh save of the season.
Flores led the Spinners offense with a three hit night, while Longhi extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games with a two-hit night. Sopilka also added two hits, while Betts ended the Spinners six-game homer-less streak in the win.
Randy Perez (2-2, 2.78) picked up the win, going five innings while allowing just one run on five hits and two walks. He struck out four. German Taveras followed with two innings, allowing a run on one hit, striking out two. Chandler Shepherd allowed a run in his one inning of work before Pinales closed out the win.
The two teams conclude the brief two-game series when Kevin McAvoy makes his professional debut Tuesday morning for a special 11am first pitch.
