From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians saw a 3-0 advantage through three innings vanish as Columbus scored three in the fourth and five in the fifth before holding off the Tribe, 8-6, last night at The Vic. Kevin Kramer notched a pair of run-scoring singles in the first and third innings, but Clippers leadoff man Brandon Barnes tallied a game-high four RBI to propel the visitors to a series-opening win. His three-run double off Damien Magnifico in the fifth broke the game open, 8-3. Kevin Newman made it an 8-4 ballgame with a two-out RBI single in the eighth, preceding Christopher Bostick's first homer of 2018 that cut the deficit to two. Indy went quietly in the ninth against Ben Taylor (S, 4). Newman logged three hits and Indy out-hit Columbus, 14-10. Clay Holmes suffered the loss for Indy after yielding seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
MUSGROVE ON A REHAB: Right-hander Joe Musgrove will make his third rehab start this May and first with Indianapolis tonight at The Vic. Acquired by the Pirates, along with 3B Colin Moran, RHP Michael Feliz and OF Jason Martin, in the Gerrit Cole swap with Houston, Musgrove is expected to fill the fifth spot in Pittsburgh's rotation once healthy. He started with High-A Bradenton on May 1 and allowed two runs in three innings pitched. Then on May 7 with Double-A Altoona against Erie, he yielded just one run on two hits in four innings with four strikeouts. Last year, Musgrove went 7-8 with a 4.77 ERA in 38 games (15 starts). He thrived as a reliever, recording a 3-0 record, two saves and a 1.44 ERA (5 ER/31.1 IP). He also made seven relief appearances during Houston's World Series run, including four in the Fall Classic against Los Angeles (NL).
WORLD SERIES WINNER ON THE BUMP: Musgrove won a World Series ring with the Astros last year. He will be the first pitcher to have won a World Series ring and then pitch for the Tribe since Ryan Vogelsong in 2016. Vogelsong was on both the 2012 and 2014 World Champion San Francisco Giants teams. He also pitched for Indy in 2006 in his first go-round with the Pittsburgh organization.
FACING A SOUTHPAW: Indianapolis will see left-hander Adam Wilk for a second time this season. They raked against the former Indian on April 27 at Huntington Park, scoring seven times on nine hits (two home runs) in 3.2 innings of work. Indy won that game, 17-5. The Tribe are 6-4 so far this season and are batting .299 with 11 of their 15 home runs against southpaws. Jacob Stallings (.407, 11-for-27, 4 doubles, 5 RBI) and Jordan Luplow (.393, 11-for-28, 3 homers, 1 triple, 2 doubles, 10 RBI) have owned lefties this season.
SAILING RIGHT ALONG: As a team, the Tribe are batting .328 (81-for-247) in seven games against Columbus this season. Jacob Stallings (.524, 11-for-21), Austin Meadows (.423, 11-for-26) and Kevin Newman (.364, 12-for-33) are the leaders of the pack in games against the Clippers. Indy has an .888 OPS against Columbus, as well, its highest mark against any International League team this season.
BY THE NUMBERS - .484: Jordan Luplow's .484 average (15-for-31) for the month of May this year is the top mark in the International League. He ranks fifth in Triple-A and eighth in all of Minor League Baseball in batting this month.
