LAST TIME OUT: A late Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders home run in Game One of Friday's doubleheader forced extra innings in an eventual loss, and a big RailRiders home run in Game Two of the doubleheader was all the offense LHP Josh Rogers needed to help SWB to a split with the Rochester Red Wings.
In Game Two, Rogers was outstanding in tossing a complete-game, seven-inning shutout of the Red Wings. On just 91 pitches he carved up the lineup to the tune of four hits and a walk while striking out five men. He collected his third win of the season, matching Brady Lail for the team lead, and lowered his season ERA to 2.61 which sits just outside the Top-10 in the International League.
The real punch though was delivered by Brandon Drury whose rehab assignment was transferred back to the RailRiders and continued Friday night. After two runs were already home in the second inning, Drury crunched a grand slam to left field that gave SWB a 6-0 lead en route to a 7-0 win.
Drury reached in both games of the doubleheader and has now reached in all 10 games in which he has played for the RailRiders. Meanwhile, Clint Frazier put up an impressive performance in Game Two, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk and a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th inning to extend the lead to 7-0.
FAMILIAR FACES: The Rochester Red Wings come to town with three former New York Yankees minor leaguers on the roster: OF Jake Cave, LHP Dietrich Enns and RHP Zack Littell. Both Cave and Enns made it to the RailRiders, being invaluable members of the team over the past few seasons:
Cave: 168G, .296 AVG (185-for-624), 34 2B, 10 3B, 20 HR, 78 RBI, 4-for-6 SB
Enns: 21G/17GS: 8-3, 1.81 ERA, 104.1 IP, 77 H, 36 BB, 87 K (7.5 K/9)
AN AWAKENING: Monday and Wednesday nights featured explosive eight-run performances in an 8-3 and an 8-7 win for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders over the Syracuse Chiefs. Entering the series against the Chiefs, the RailRiders offense had been rather sluggish in the previous nine games, combining for 20 runs (2.2/game) on 58 hits (6.4/game) and only twice scored more than four runs in a game in that stretch.
NUMBERS ARE (RED) ROCKETING UP: OF Clint Frazier was 3-for-6, 2 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB in Friday's doubleheader vs. Rochester which continues an upward trend for the outfielder. After going 0-for-4 in first game with RailRiders this season, Frazier is 14-for-38 (.368 AVG), 4 BB/1 HBP (.442 OBP), 3 2B/2 3B/2 HR (.711 SLG) in his last 10G.
MR. JOSH ROGERS, GOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: In Game Two of Friday's doubleheader, LHP Josh Rogers tossed seven shutout innings for the first complete game of the season for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and just the second shutout of the season in total for SWB over the first 34 games of the season. While they've averaged a shutout every 17.0 games out of the gate this season, they are a little behind last year's pace of 13 shutouts (every 11.0 games) and well behind the franchise record set two seasons ago of 24 (every 6.0 games).
READY TO PITCH: In Friday's Game One, the Rochester Red Wings plated 4-of-5 inherited runners off the RailRiders bullpen. LHP Oliver Perez allowed both runners he inherited to score when OF Jake Cave delivered a two-out, two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the 5th inning, and RHP Cody Carroll entered with the bases loaded in the 8th inning and 2-of-3 runners scored. This season, the RailRiders have allowed 17-of-40 (42.5%) inherited runners to score, and a large part of that is that bullpen arms are allowing first hitters to bat 18-68 (.264 BAA) with a .333 OBP (26-78).
