Hens Use Home Runs to Defeat Bats

The Toledo Mud Hens put three balls over the right field fence in an 8-4 victory over the Louisville Bats. Jason Krizan, Christin Stewart and Kenny Wilson all blasted solo shots to lead the charge for the Mud Hens offense.

Scoring for the Toledo Mud Hens (22-12) started in the first inning on a ground out to the third baseman by Dawel Lugo, giving him his twelfth RBI of the campaign, plating Ronny Rodriguez.

In the second inning, Krizan lifted on to right on a 1-2 count pushing the score to 2-0. In the ensuing inning, Stewart mimicked Krizan and launched one over the right field fence and the Toledo lead became 3-0. Wilson took his turn hitting a dinger in the fourth inning and took the advantage to 4-0 for the Mud Hens. The Hens early offense gave Louisville Bats (12-20) pitcher Zach Neal (2-1, 5.94 ERA) his first loss of the season.

Later in the fourth, Rodriguez used a double to center field to score Harold Castro giving the Hens a 5-0 lead. In the fifth, Jim Adduci doubled scoring Lugo. Then, Chad Huffman and Wilson reached safely loading the bases with one out and Jarrod Saltalamacchia up to bat. He reached first on a throwing error, and both Adduci and Huffman came in to score. The Mud Hens led 8-0 at the end of the fifth.

The Toledo pitching staff started out strong allowing no runs through the first five innings. Kevin Comer got the start and went two innings giving up four hits, zero runs, one walk and he recorded one strikeout.

Paul Voelker recorded his second win of the campaign pitching two innings, allowing two hits, zero runs, zero walks and recording two strikeouts.

Victor Alcantara threw three innings suffering four hits, two runs, two earned runs, no walks and he struck out two batters.

Caleb Thielbar came in for one inning of work and did not allow a hit, run or walk.

To close the game for the Hens, Johnny Barbato allowed two hits, two runs, two earned runs, one walk and struck out one batter.

The Bats put four total runs on the board, but the Hens eight early runs were enough for the victory.

Toledo will be back in action against Louisville tomorrow afternnon with the first pitch being thrown at 2:00 p.m.
