May 14, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks are back at home to face the Arkansas Diamonds for the second and final meeting of the 2010 regular season. The Roughnecks are coming off an important road win over the Austin Turfcats (46-29) back on Saturday, May 8. The Roughnecks were clicking on all cylinders in the win over Austin as the defense posted three sacks with a defensive touchdown, and QB Tommy Jones supplied the offensive unit with 200 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Roughnecks (3-6) begin a stretch in which of four of their final five games of the regular season will be played at home. The Roughnecks are looking to avenge a 71-28 loss in their previous meeting with the Diamonds back on May 1.

The Diamonds will see a different offensive line-up this Saturday as opposed to what they saw on May 1. QB Devin Campbell started for an injured Tommy Jones in the first meeting, but this time around Jones will get the start and he will have Peter Fields working on the offensive line. The Diamonds are coming off a 71-33 home loss to the Omaha Beef in which the Beef posted eight touchdown passes and the Diamonds offense recorded five interceptions. The Roughnecks will look to attack the Diamonds defense through the air as they did against the Turfcats. Wide outs Ryan Bugg, Steve Bergeski and Josh Floyd will play key roles in the aerial attack and look for WR Nathaniel Dunn to be another factor inside the red-zone.

The Roughnecks defense recorded three sacks in the first half against the Turfcats and they will look to provide the same pressure on the Diamonds offense. The big question for the Arkansas offense is at the quarterback position. The Diamonds will turn to either Willie Copeland or James Pinkney to lead the offensive unit on Saturday and look for Steven Savoy to be the main target in the passing attack for Arkansas. The Diamonds (7-2) defense has developed into one of the best in the Indoor Football League, as the unit recorded four fumble recoveries and three interceptions against the Roughnecks in their last meeting. Look for Luis Vasquez to be the focal point of the Arkansas defensive line and T.C. Myers will be another impact player who will try to contain the Roughnecks short-yardage passing schemes.

The Diamonds offense might be looking to run the ball more against the Roughnecks defense, which depends on the play from the quarterback position. The Roughnecks defensive line has looked sharp as of late and Jermaine Blakely & James Vess have been the two key players on that line. Second-half turnovers and special teams play will be important factors to consider in this ball game. However, the most important match-up will be the Roughnecks passing attack against the strong Arkansas defensive line in this non-divisional ball game.
