Bloomington Extreme News Release
BLOOMINGTON (Ill.) - Extreme kicker Peter Christofilakos made four field goals in the game against the Chicago Slaughter - none more important than the very last one. The University of Illinois graduate made a 41-yard field goal, with two seconds remaining, to solidify a 33-30 victory over the Slaughter in front of 4,269 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum Friday night.
Quarterback Rocky Hinds led the Extreme (5-5) passing attack as he was 18-27 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver John Cooper had another solid game catching nine passes for 92 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Johnny Grey hauled in seven catches for 53 yards. Defensive backs Terrell Mayberry and David Darby recorded 10 tackles apiece to lead the defense.
Slaughter (4-5) quarterback Tavares Woodley was 28-39 for 242 yards with four touchdowns. Wide receiver Shatone Powers had seven catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
After the Extreme defense blocked a Ben Agular field goal attempt, Hinds found wide receiver Charles Sullivan for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter as Bloomington struck first, 7-0.
On their first possession of the second quarter, Hinds tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Cooper as the Extreme took a commanding 14-0 lead. The Slaughter would immediately respond however, as Woodley found Powers in the back of the end zone for a six yard touchdown pass as Chicago cut the lead to 14-7, with 9:49 remaining in the half.
Christofilakos would answer with a 19-yard field goal to extend the Extreme lead to 17-7, with 4:32 left in the half. On their ensuing drive, Reggie Gray recovered a fumble in the end zone as the Extreme's lead was cut to 17-14, with 1:54 remaining in the half. After retrieving their own on-side kick, the Slaughter marched down the field and just before the half ended, Woodley found Powers in the back corner of the end zone for his second touchdown of the game as Chicago took the lead for the first time, 21-17. Christofilakos would answer with his second field goal of the game as time expired and Chicago took a 21-20 lead into the locker room.
After holding the Slaughter on fourth down on their first possession of the second half, the Extreme offense took over and Christofilakos nailed yet another field goal, this time from 34 yards out as Bloomington regained the lead, 23-21.
Early in the fourth quarter, after an Agular missed field goal, Hinds marched the Extreme offense down the field and took it in from two-yards out himself as Bloomington took a commanding 30-21 lead with 10:27 remaining in the game. Agular would add another field goal, this time from 20 yards out, as the Slaughter cut the deficit to 30-24 with 6:02 left in the game.
With 47 seconds remaining in the game, Woodley threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Gray to tie the game at 30. However, Agular's extra point was blocked once again by the Extreme defense to hold the game at a tie, 30-30 with 43 seconds left.
The Extreme will travel to La Crosse, Wis., to take on the Spartans May 21. This will be the second time in three weeks the two teams have met with Bloomington taking the first, 54-18 last week. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
