Chicago Slaughter News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES - The Chicago Slaughter (4-5), the premier indoor football team in the Chicagoland area, fell to Central North Division rival Bloomington Extreme (5-5) with a final score of 33-30 in a closely contested game Friday night at the US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL. QB Tavares Woodley made his first start of the season for the Slaughter going 28 for 39 for 242 yards and four touchdowns. WR Shatone Powers led the team with seven catches for 76 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Defensively, LB Lenny Radtke had 12 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, while DB Sam Smith recovered an on-side kick and had an interception.
The defenses were key for both teams early in the first quarter. The Slaughter set the tone early as DL Ron Ellington recovered a fumble in Slaughter territory to keep the Extreme off the board. Bloomington's defense responded by blocking a 23-yard Ben Aguilar field goal attempt to keep the Slaughter from scoring. Bloomington got on the board with a 26-yard touchdown pass from QB Rocky Hinds to Charles Sullivan to put the Extreme up 7-0 in the first quarter.
Bloomington put another score on the board to start the second quarter with a Hinds 43-yard touchdown to WR John Cooper to put Bloomington up 14-0. The Slaughter got on the scoreboard five minutes into the second quarter, as Woodley connected with Powers on a 6-yard touchdown strike to cut the lead in half. The Extreme responded with a 19-yard field goal to make the score 17-7 in the second quarter. Chicago reached the end zone later in the quarter as WR De'Cody Fagg caught a 13-yard touchdown from Woodley to cut the lead to 17-14. Chicago continued their momentum as Smith recovered an on-side kick leading to Woodley finding Powers once again in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown giving the Slaughter a 21-17 lead with nine seconds left in the second quarter. Bloomington took a squib kick past midfield, and after a quick first down, connected on a 31-yard field goal to make it a one point game with Chicago leading 21-20 lead going into halftime.
The Extreme took the lead early in the third quarter on a 33-yard field goal and after a scoring drought for both sides, opened the 4th quarter with Hinds reaching the end zone on a two-yard quarterback keeper to extend their lead to 30-21. Chicago was able to drive down to the Extreme goal line on their next possession, but settled for a 25-yard Aguilar field goal to cut the deficit to 6 points. Smith came up big on the following Bloomington drive, as his interception in his own end zone kept Chicago in the game. Following a fumble by Hinds, Chicago capitalized on the error scoring on a 20-yard pass from Woodley to WR Reggie Gray to tie the game, but Aguilar had his extra point blocked to keep the score 30-30. Bloomington had time left to drive into Chicago territory, and, with seconds left on the clock, Christofilakos' 4th field goal of the game from 31 yards out gave the Extreme the win with the final score of 33-30.
"All in all, it was a hard fought game," said Woodley. "I thought we could have played a lot better, but we had a couple of miscues. It came down to the last ten seconds, but they came out with a victory"
The Slaughter will face Green Bay at home on Saturday, May 22nd, at the Sears Centre Arena; kickoff will be at 7:05 p.m. For more information or for tickets to the May 22nd game, please call the team office at (847) 310-3190 or visit the team website at www.ChicagoSlaughter.com
