Gambrell Guides Sea Dogs to 12-0 Shutout Over Flying Squirrels

Richmond, Virginia- The Portland Sea Dogs (16-9, 56-38) shutout the Richmond Flying Squirrels (15-10, 48-46) 12-0 on Friday night.

Grant Gambrell pitched 7.0 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts before Theo Denlinger and Dylan Spacke combined for 2.0 perfect innings in relief. Six Sea Dogs recorded multi-hit days at the plate as Portland matched a season-high with seventeen combined hits on the day. Tyler Esplin racked up five RBI to match a career-high while going three-for-five at the plate.

A pitcher's duel kept the game scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Chase Meidroth drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Blaze Jordan scored another with an RBI single to score Meidroth and Portland led, 2-0. Phillip Sikes scored Nathan Hickey with a single to left field to complete the three-run inning.

Esplin recorded his first hit of the season with Portland in the top of the seventh with a double to center field. Nick Yorke drove him home with a double (14) of his own and the Sea Dogs extended the 4-0 lead.

Portland plated five runs in the top of the eighth after nine batters to the plate. Tyler Dearden worked a bases-loaded walk before a three-RBI double from Esplin (2) cleared the bases to put Portland on top 8-0. Corey Rosier scored Esplin with an RBI single to cap off the inning.

Esplin hit a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to rack up five RBI on the day before an RBI single from Rosier secured the 12-0 Portland win.

Portland starter RHP Grant Gambrell (4-2, 3.12 ERA) earned the win after pitching 7.0 scoreless innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out eight. The loss was issued to Richmond reliever RHP Spencer Bivens (1-3, 4.95 ERA) after pitching 2.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one. He did not issue a walk.

The Sea Dogs return to The Diamond tomorrow, Saturday, July 29th, 2023 for game five of a six-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. First pitch for game five is slated for 6:05pm. Portland will start RHP Wikelman Gonzalez (1-0, 0.75) while Richmond will give the ball to LHP John Michael Bertrand (1-1, 6.75).
