Midland, MI - Clinton right-hander Nolan Gallagher suffered another tough-luck loss, handcuffing Great Lakes to just three runs on five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out a season-high eight batters. Only a Nick Franklin solo home run supported him as the LumberKings fell 3-1 to the Loons at Dow Diamond.

Franklin's two-out, bases-empty shot to the right-field grass seats gave the Kings a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. His Midwest League lead-tying 18th clout of the year came on the first pitch he saw from right-hander Allen Webster.

Gallagher couldn't make that lead stand up for long as Christian Lara greeted him with a leadoff double down the right-field line in the bottom of the first. After moving to third on Nick Buss's fly out to center, Lara scored on a single to right by Angelo Songco.

In the second inning, Gallagher nearly navigated his way through a one-on, two-out jam, but surrendered a towering drive off the bat of Brian Ruggiano. His two-run blast put the Loons ahead, 3-1.

The game stayed that way as Gallagher (L, 0-4) yielded only one more hit over the next 5.0 innings. Right-hander Jorden Merry struck out one in a scoreless eighth.

The LumberKings had a golden chance in the eighth as Vinnie Catricala ripped a two-out double off left-hander Jordan Roberts (H, 3) to put the tying runs in scoring position, but right-hander Steve Smith (H, 11) came on and struck out Henry Contreras looking to preserve the two-run lead. Closer Luis Vasquez (S, 16) then pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Webster (W, 9-6) allowed only the run on Franklin's homer over 5.0 innings, working past three walks while striking out five.

Franklin finished 2-for-4 and was the only hitter for either side to log a multi-hit game. The RBI was his 44th of the season. Ruggiano went 1-for-2 with his third home run of the year.

The LumberKings (13-11) continue the series against Great Lakes (20-5) tomorrow night at Dow Diamond, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (7-4, 3.91) makes his 16th start of the season against the Loons. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
