Dayton, Ohio-Jean Segura collected four hits to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to an 8-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons in the first game of a three-game series. The Kernels pounded out 17 hits in the game including 14 in the first six innings. All nine players in their batting order had at least one hit.

Cedar Rapids scored two runs in the first inning, two more in the second, and one in the third against Dragons starting pitcher Ricky Bowen (2-4) to take an early 5-0 lead.

The Dragons pulled to within three runs when they scored twice in the fourth inning. Cameron Satterwhite got the rally started with an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Mark Fleury doubled to the gap in left center. Fleury scored on an error to make it 5-2.

But Cedar Rapids scored two more runs in the sixth inning to again lead by five. Matt Long's two-run single against Dayton reliever Jamie Walczak brought in the runs. The Kernels closed out the scoring with one run in the top of the ninth against Dragons reliever Jason Braun.

Bowen suffered the loss for Dayton. He worked three innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) with one walk and no strikeouts.

The Dragons finished with six hits. Satterwhite and Henry Rodriguez each had two hits.

The Dragons (8-16) battle the Kernels (14-10) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the three-game set. Justin Walker (3-8, 5.34) will start for Dayton against Garrett Richards (7-4, 3.61). The series concludes on Friday at 7:00. Friday's game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on most Time Warner Cable systems). Former Reds Rookie of the Year Tommy Helms, the second baseman on the 1970 National League pennant winners, will provide color commentary.
