Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves couldn't make up any ground in the playoff race, needing everything they had just to salvage a split with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a doubleheader on Tuesday night in Scranton, PA. Gwinnett lost the first game 4-3 in 8 innings, and held on to take the second contest 3-2. The G-Braves (64-53) drop 3.0 games behind Durham in second place in the International League South. Gwinnett is also in second in the Wild Card race by a 2.5 game margin. The Yankees (62-55) remain in third place in the IL North.
Game 1 It Was Over When: In a wild, back and forth game, it took, you guessed it, a wild pitch to settle things. G-Braves RHP Jaye Chapman uncorked one in the 8th inning (and extra frame in the game, which was scheduled for 7 innings), allowing Yankee Dan Brewer to score from third base in the 4-3 SWB win. Braves Beat: On the Mound: Starting LHP Yohan Flande went 6.0 innings once again back in the rotation, allowing 3 R/ER on 4 H with 2 BB and 2 K's. Chapman (1-2) allowed 1 R/ER in 1.2 IP in the loss. At the Plate: Center fielder Jeff Fiorentino paced the G-Braves with a 2-for-3 night with an RBI, while LF Matt Young also had 2 hits in 4 Abs in the game. The Opposition: On the Mound: Yankees starting RHP Adam Warren went 6.0 IP to match Flande, also allowing 3 R/ER but on 7 H with 2 BB and 3 K's. Kevin Whelan (2-2) went 2.0 IP of scoreless ball to clinch the win. At the Plate: SWB catcher and Yankees top prospect Jesus Montero torched the Braves, going 1-for-3 with a HR and 2 RBI.
Game 2 It Was Over When: Gwinnett's big contributor was once again CF Jeff Fiorentino as, after SWB rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the 6th inning, the man they call "Fio" wrapped a double to score Brandon Hicks for the deciding 3-2 lead. Braves Beat: On the Mound: Starting RHP Steven Shell went 5.1 effective innings, allowing only 1 R/ER on 2 H with a BB and 5 K's. Closer and RHP Jairo Asencio (3-2) blew his first save of the year, but earned the win in 0.2 innings of work, yielding 1 R. RHP Cory Gearrin notched his first save of the year with a scoreless 7th inning. At the Plate: Fiorentino finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, LF Matt Young was 2-for-3 with his first HR of the season and an RBI and SS Tyler Pastornicky was 3-for-3 with a SB. The Opposition: On the Mound: Yankees starting RHP George Kontos went 4.1 IP, allowing 2 R/ER on 7 H with a BB and 3 K's. Eric Wordekemper (3-3) came on in relief and allowed 1 R/ER in 1.2 IP for the loss. At the Plate: SWB DH Jesus Montero was 1-for-3 with another RBI in game two.
On Deck: The G-Braves take on the Yankees in the fourth game of this road swing, with all games in Scranton, PA, on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Erik Cordier (3-8, 5.71) against Yankees RHP D.J. Mitchell (9-8, 3.48). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM, and also on TV at CSS.
