2008 First Overall Draft Pick to Join Bulls

DURHAM, NC- The Durham Bulls today announced infielder Tim Beckham, the number one overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft, has been assigned to Durham. Reid Brignac was recalled to Tampa Bay after former Durham Bull Justin Ruggiano was placed on the disabled list.

Beckham's promotion comes in the middle of a career season in Double-A already setting career highs in runs scored (82) and home runs with seven. He was hitting .275 at the time of his promotion, his highest batting average as a member of a full-season team. Entering the season Beckham was ranked the 15th best prospect in the Rays Organization by Baseball America, and he was also named the Best-Infield Arm in the organization by Baseball America.

Beckham was selected first in the 2008 draft out of Griffin High School in Georgia where he hit .482 his senior year. He became the first Georgia native selected number one overall since Mike Ivie (Padres) in 1970. He spent most of 2008 at Rookie Level Princeton batting .243 with 30 runs scored. He elevated to Bowling Green in 2009 where he batted .275 and finished ranked as the #6 prospect in the Rays system according to Baseball America. Last season in Port Charlotte, he batted .256 with five home runs and 68 runs scored.
