LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - After both bullpens were taxed for over 12 combined innings of relief work on Sunday afternoon, both the Gwinnett Braves and Columbus Clippers needed a lift from their starters. Right-hander Joe Martinez delivered for the Clippers (32-33), tossing 6.1 innings of two-run baseball in a 5-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves (27-39) on Monday night at Coolray Field.

Columbus got off to a great start against Gwinnett starter David Hale. In the first inning, the Clippers took advantage of two errors and a sacrifice fly by Lonnie Chisenhall to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Chun Chen continued his hot series against the G-Braves, homering for the third-straight game to give the Clippers a 2-0 edge. Tim Fedroff followed with a double and scored on an RBI single by Matt Lawson. Lawson would later score on an RBI double by Ezequiel Carrera, extending the lead to 4-0.

The G-Braves cut to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Sean Kazmar singled, stole second base, moved to third on a fielding error by the shortstop Lawson and scored on an RBI single by Tyler Pastornicky, making it 4-1.

In the fourth inning, the Clippers used a leadoff single by Fedroff and an RBI double by Lawson to increase their lead to 5-1. Hale (L, 1-3) was chased as a result, having allowed five runs, four earned on eight hits over 3.1 innings.

The Gwinnett offense, meanwhile, had no answer for Martinez (W, 2-5). The right-hander snapped a three-game losing streak, hurling 6.1 innings with two runs allowed, one earned, on eight hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Martinez's only earned run came in the sixth inning, as Joey Terdoslavich smacked his 11th homer of the season over the right field fence, making it 5-2.

The G-Braves would not get any closer, as J.C. Romero (H, 4) and Jerry Gil combined to toss 2.2 innings of hitless relief. Gil (S, 2) picked up the save, going 1.2 innings and striking out one.

The Gwinnett bullpen was also solid on the night, hurling 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Ryan Buchter tied a season-high, striking out five of the six batters he faced over 2.0 innings. Joe Beimel, Wirfin Obispo and Pat Egan each turned in scoreless outings as well.

Offensively for Gwinnett, Pastornicky went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Terdoslavich added the homer and his 44th RBI of the season.

Fedroff led the Clippers, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Chen added another home run, his fifth overall this season.

The Gwinnett Braves conclude the series against the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday afternoon; first pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM. Right-hander Omar Poveda (4-3, 3.24) will start for the G-Braves, while right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 3.92) is expected to start for the Clippers. Tony Schiavone will call the play-by-play on 1240 ESPN Radio. The game will also be broadcast on television on CSS and carried live by MLB Network.

Tuesday is "Day Care Day" at Coolray Field, with day care groups from around the area joining the G-Braves for a special 12:05 PM game. Tickets are on sale now by calling the Coolray Field Box Office at (678) 277-0340 or by visiting gwinnettbraves.com.
