G-Braves Can't Hold on for Minor
April 12, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves couldn't tag another win to their consecutive victory streak, dropping the middle date of the three game series against the Norfolk Tides 4-3 on Tuesday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. G-Braves starter Mike Minor struck out a season best 9 batters, but his stellar outing was wasted in the defeat as the team couldn't hold a lead twice in the game. The Gwinnett Braves (3-3) are now tied with Durham in second place in the International League South division at 2.0 games back, while the Tides (1-5) are in fourth place at 4.0 games out.
It Was Over When: With the G-Braves leading 3-2 in 7th inning, RHP Cory Gearrin came on in relief. He walked three batters and then gave up a 2 run single to give the lead back to the Tides for good.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: LHP Minor went 6.0 IP, allowing 6 H, 2 R/ER, BB and a single season high for any G-Braves pitcher with 9 K's. Gearrin (0-1) had a 1.0 IP outing with 2 R/ER, 3 BB and one strikeout that earned him the loss.
At the plate: After going hitless in his first 3 games, SS Ed Lucas had his second straight multi-hit game with at least 1 RBI. He finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. DH Jose Constanza (1-for-3, RBI, SB) and CF Jordan Schafer (2-for-5, SB) both extended their hitting streaks to 5 games.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Norfolk RHP Chorye Spoone went 5.0 IP, yielding 7 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB and 1 K. LHP Alberto Castillo (1-0) went 1.1 IP with 1 K to earn the win, while LHP Clay Rapada earned his first save of the season.
At the Plate: First baseman Brandon Snyder went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI to lead the Tides at the plate.
On Deck: Gwinnett wraps up with Norfolk with the final game of their three game series at 7:05 p.m at Coolray Field. The G-Braves send out the top of their rotation again, getting a start from RHP Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 1.50 ERA). He will face off against RHP Ryan Drese (0-0, 3.00 ERA). The game can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM.
