(Fort Mill, SC) After back-to-back last-inning defeats, Durham (3-3) answered with a 5-2 win at Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon thanks to solid relief and the bat of Jose Lobaton.

Lobaton singled, doubled and homered, and four relievers combined to shut out the top hitting team in the league over the final seven innings. The loss was the first for Charlotte (5-1).

Durham took a 1-0 lead in the first on Brandon Guyer's first Triple-A homer off Gaby Hernandez (0-1). Charlotte answered on a sac fly off Richard De Los Santos by Jim Gallagher, a former Duke standout.

The Bulls took the lead for good on a Russ Canzler double in the second, tacking on a run on an Omar Luna single in the same frame for a 3-1 advantage. Charlotte did pull within one on a Gookie Dawkins base hit in the bottom of the frame.

De Los Santos, who threw 60 pitches over two innings, departed after completing that inning.

The Bulls added single runs in the third on a Leslie Anderson double and a Lobaton homer in the fifth.

Chris Bootcheck followed with two scoreless innings, followed by two from Mike Ekstrom (1-0) and Cory Wade. Brandon Gomes allowed a leadoff bloop hit in the ninth, and then fanned the side for his second save.

Durham wraps up its opening road trip on Wednesday at 7:15. RHP Dirk Hayhurst takes the mound for the second time as a Bull. He'll be opposed by former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy, who makes a major league rehab start.

Coverage begins at 7 p.m. on 620 the Buzz and www.durhambulls.com.
