Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

August 17, 2008 - For the second time in two games, Clay Fuller has been responsible for driving in the game-winning run. On Saturday, Fuller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth to give the Kernels a ‘bean-off' win over the Beloit Snappers. And on Sunday, Fuller hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Kernels a walk-off, 5-4 win over the Snappers.

Fuller was 2-4 on the day with a double, walk and 2 RBI to go with his HR. Jeremy Moore was 3-6 and Gabe Jacobo was 2-4 with 3 RBI as the Kernels had 10 hits in the game. Kernels starter Michael Davitt allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked three and struck out three over six innings in a no-decision effort.

Three Kernel relievers: Ysmael Carmona, Eddie McKiernan and Naldy Calderon (2-0), combined to hold the Snappers scoreless over the final seven innings with Calderon picking up the win.

Beloit starter Michael McCardell allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight over five innings but didn't figure in the final decision. Kyle Martin (1-2) was tagged with the loss. Greg Yersich was 3-5 with an RBI and Ramon Santana hit a solo HR in the fourth inning.

The Kernels improve to 31-25 in the second half of the MWL season (63-61 overall) and remain in second place in the MWL Western Division. They trail Burlington by at least 3 games, as Burlington and Quad Cities didn't start their game on Sunday until 5 pm.

Game three of this four game series is Monday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It's a Mix 96.5 FM Belly Buster Monday and the Kernels welcome guests from Winthrop to their community night at the stadium. Game time is 7 pm with the gates opening at 6 pm.

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Monday. The current home stand continues through Tuesday, August 19.
