West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Following a shutout loss on Saturday, Jordan Newton led off the game Sunday with a solo home run for the Whitecaps who defeated South Bend, 9-4. Joe Tucker and Kody Kaiser each hit solo shots for the Whitecaps in the second inning. It was just the second time this season that West Michigan hitters had gone deep three times in a game. May 13 at Fort Wayne was the other occurrence.

Manny Miguelez allowed one hit prior to the fourth inning and retired 11 of the first 13 Silver Hawks batters he faced.

With the Whitecaps in front, 5-0 in the fourth, Derrick Walker doubled with two out. He then scored on a single by Eli Rumler. In the fifth, Miguelez allowed a two-out three run homer to Sean Coughlin, which cut the West Michigan lead to 5-4.

Miguelez came out of the game after the fifth inning and Andrew Hess pitched the rest of the contest. Hess threw four shutout innings with four hits, no walks and three strikeouts to earn his first professional save. The Whitecaps tallied a single run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to provide the final margin of victory. Several West Michigan players had multiple hits, including Chris Carlson, who was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Newton finished 2-for-6 and scored twice. Joe Tucker went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a two runs scored. Alex Avila had two hits including a double and an RBI. Chris White went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Half of White's 16 hits with the Whitecaps have been doubles. The Whitecaps collected a total of 15 hits, which is the most since the ‘Caps had 15 hits in an 8-7 loss to Fort Wayne on July 4.
