Adirondack Frostbite News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Adirondack Frostbite ended their three-game losing streak, and wrapped up the road portion of their regular-season schedule with a 5-4 win over the Elmira Jackals in front of 2,645 fans at First Arena.
Despite being out-shot 13-5 in the first period, the Frostbite had a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes. J.F. Picard opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game, scoring his first goal with the Frostbite. Hugo Belanger fed Picard at the right point, and his shot from the blue line deflected off of the stick of Jackals' defenseman Brett Angel and past goaltender Tyson Gajda giving Adirondack the 1-0 lead.
The Frostbite power play doubled the lead at 5:54. Scott Drevitch took a quick wrist shot from the left point that deflected off of the post to Gajda's right, and rolled across the line for his 13th goal of the season.
Adirondack had two great chances to extend the lead in the opening minute of the second period, as Hugo Belanger and Mike Berry had separate breakaway opportunities on Gajda, but the Jackals' goaltender was able to stop both chances.
Just after Berry's attempt was stopped, Elmira came back up the ice and got on the board for the first time. Sam Paolini's wrist shot from the far wall eluded Jason Saal's reach for his 17th goal of the season.
The Jackals pulled even at 7:08. Chris Chaput centered a pass in front for Kevin Cooper, who beat Saal to the glove side for his 33rd of the year, and his 11th against the Frostbite.
Adirondack went back ahead at 11:44. David Moccia skated down the left-wing wall, and centered in front for Kevin Watters in then right-wing circle. Watters was able to redirect the puck past Gajda for his team-leading 36th goal of the campaign.
The Frostbite's second-power play goal of the night three minutes later extended the lead back to two goals. Belanger found Ryan Bennett on the near post, and Bennett was able to tip the puck past Gajda for goal number 24.
Elmira pulled back within one 13:33 into the third period. Trevor Burgess took a shot from the center point that changed directions in front, and eluded Saal's reach for his seventh goal of the season.
But, the Frostbite retook the two-goal lead just 1:15 later. Greg Koehler fed Drevitch at the top of the left-wing circle, and he was able to beat Gajda just under the cross bar for his second of the night.
The Jackals again pulled within one with 1:43 remaining as Mathieu Wathier beat Saal with a shot from the right point.
Elmira went on the power play with 29.3 seconds left, and had a 6-on-4 advantage with Gajda off for an extra attacker. But, the Frostbite were able to fend off the advantage, and held on for the win.
The Frostbite return home for the final game of the 2005-06 regular season on Saturday, as they host the Jackals in the back end of the home-and-home series at 7:35 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Glens Falls Civic Center Box Office, or by calling (518) 798-0202.
