Frostbite begin quest for Colonial Cup Friday against Danbury

The Frostbite finished the regular season off strong with a victory at home in front of 5,472 fans over the Elmira Jackals 4-2. Greg Koehler and Hugo Belanger each had three point games to lead the Frostbite. Earlier in the week Adirondack's road woes continued with losses in Richmond Wednesday night 5-3 and Friday night in Elmira 3-1.

Wednesday, April 6th

The Adirondack Frostbite scored three times in the second period to take a one goal lead into the third, but gave up three goals in the final twenty minutes of play to fall to the Richmond RiverDogs 5-3. Greg Koehler scored twice for the Frostbite and only seconds after his second goal, J.F. Labarre scored to put the Frostbite on top. It was the last time that evening Adirondack saw the lead giving up three goals scored from down low, one which went off the skate of a player and another which ricocheted off the stick of Frostbite goaltender Derek Gustafson and in. For Richmond's Luch Nasato and Brian Goudie, it was their final home game as they are retiring after the season. Each had multiple point evenings.

Friday, April 8th

The Adirondack Frostbite struggled again away from the Glens Falls Civic Center falling to the Elmira Jackals for only the second time this season in regulation by a score of 3-1. Elmira scored twice in the opening period to take a two goal lead, before early in the second Justin Kelly tallied for the Frostbite to bring Adirondack within one. Minutes later the Jackals scored on the man advantage. Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the final period.

Saturday, April 9th

The Adirondack Frostbite finished off the regular season on a high note with a 4-2 victory over the Elmira Jackals Saturday night in front of 5,472 fans. Adirondack opened up a 3-0 advantage after the first period with two even strength goals and one on the power play. Hugo Belanger scored first just under two minutes into the game on a pass from Justin Kelly. The Frostbite then went on the power play when Greg Koehler knocked a puck in from just outside the crease. J.F. Labarre capped off the first period with a back handed goal and the Frostbite didn't look back. There was no more scoring until the third period when the Jackals cut the Frostbite lead to two when Tom Clayton scored just 30 seconds in. The Frostbite retook a three goal lead on Koehler's second goal of the game and 42 of the season. Elmira would add one more by George Pujacs as the Frostbite went on to win.

TEAM NOTES:

EASTERN DIVISION CHAMPS: The season is over, the playoff are set and the Adirondack Frostbite are one of eight teams fighting for the coveted Colonial Cup. With a win last Saturday against Flint, coupled with a Danbury loss to Richmond the Adirondack Frostbite clinched their first Eastern Division Championship. Since the Frostbite have won their division they have guaranteed themselves home ice advantage for the first round. Following Friday's loss to the Jackals and Fort Wayne's win in Missouri the Frostbite will play sixth seeded Danbury in the First Round of the Colonial Cup Playoffs. Game one and two will be at the Glens Falls Civic Center Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7:35 p.m. The other match-ups are: Kalamazoo vs. Rockford; Missouri vs. Fort Wayne; Quad City vs. Muskegon.

ATTENDANCE UP: With a crowd of 5,472 Frostbite fans at the final regular season game of the season Adirondack's attendance average is up 239 people per game from the following season and finish averaging 2,912 per game.

SCORING TITLE BACK TO BELANGER: After a one year hiatus, Frostbite Left Wing Hugo Belanger lead the league in scoring with 106 points (34g, 72a). Belanger finished three points ahead of Flint's Bobby Reynolds and six points ahead of Richmond's David Hymovitz. The Frostbite had two other players finish in the top 20 in scoring: Greg Koehler finished tied for fourth with 98 points (42g, 56a), while Sylvain Cloutier finished 17th with 77 points. This is Belanger's eighth straight 100 point season.

DREVITCH LEADS D-MEN IN SCORING: Scott Drevitch finished first amongst defenseman in scoring with 61 points (13g, 48a). He finished five ahead of Missouri's Mat Snesrud. Drevitch also finished second amongst all blueliners in goals with 13 and first in assists with 48. He lead all defenseman in shots with 239. Bob Rapoza finished tied for 15th amongst defensemen in scoring with 33 points (10g, 23a).

RECORD BREAKING: Sylvain Cloutier worked his way up on all of the Adirondack (UHL) All-time lists. With all regular season games in the books he is tenth on the All-time points list and assists list, ninth on the All-time goals list and third on the All-time power play goals list. Justin Kelly scored his 100th pro point Saturday. The Frostbite have set franchise records in points (104), wins (48), fewest losses (24) and fewest penalty minutes (1,451) coming into the final game of the season.

OUT OF THE BOX: The Frostbite finished the season last in the league in penalty minutes averaging only 18.1 per game. Adirondack also finished last in the league in minors and majors. Despite all of this Scott Page lead rookies in penalty minutes with 237 and leads all rookies in majors with 31.

CLOSE CALLS: This season the Frostbite have been involved in 38 games where they either won or lost by a goal. In those games the Frostbite are 23-7-8. Only nine times this season have the Frostbite either won or lost by four goals or more.

CALL-UP's: Heading into the weekend Ryan Bennett is spending his second weekend in Rochester (AHL). In four games with the Americans he has seven penalty minutes and a Plus/Minus of -1. Bennett is expected to be in the Rochester line-up tonight when they take on the Syracuse Crunch. In the UHL he finishes fifth amongst all rookies in scoring with 57 points. Bennett is also fourth amongst rookies in assists with 35, fifth amongst rookies in shots with 184, and tied for fifth in the league in plus/minus at +32. He lead all rookies in shorthanded goals with five.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: The Adirondack Frostbite's Player of the Month for the month of March is Right Wing Greg Koehler. He finished the month with 16 points (7g, 9a) and 60 penalty minutes.

TRANSACTIONS:

Tuesday the Adirondack Frostbite placed Defenseman David Vychodil on the 10-Day Injured Reserve. Thursday the Adirondack Frostbite placed Right Wing Frank Bakrlik on the 7-Day Injured Reserve. Friday the Adirondack Frostbite signed Right Wing Lyon Porter to a Professional Tryout Agreement. Saturday the Adirondack Frostbite signed Left Wing Cody McLeod to a Standard Player Contract.

THE UPCOMING WEEK:

Adirondack vs. Danbury – Friday, April 15th & Saturday, April 16th

The Adirondack Frostbite will play its 18th and 19th games this season against the Danbury Trashers Friday and Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Frostbite are 10-6-1 against the Trashers this season, winning their last match-up 4-3 in a shootout. Hugo Belanger leads Adirondack in head-to-head scoring against Danbury with 23 points (8g, 15a). Bruce Richardson leads the Trashers in head-to-head scoring against the Frostbite with 18 points (5g, 13a).
