Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wisc. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs (1-2) exploded with nine runs on 10 hits in the contest to secure their first win of the 2018 campaign over the Madison Mallards (1-2) by a final score of 9-6 in the home opener from Joannes Stadium. The Frogs used a five-run first inning to take the early advantage and then tallied a four-run fourth inning to grab the lead again after the Mallards knotted the score at five.
The Bullfrogs rebound after a tough two-game road series at Rockford to snap the brief losing streak, while the Mallards drop their second consecutive game since winning their season opener 10-2 Tuesday evening.
Both teams return to the diamond tomorrow night for the two-game series finale at Joannes Stadium. First pitch is slated for a 6:35 p.m. start. A live video webcast of the contest can be streamed online through the official Northwoods League website. Fans can also listen to the live audio broadcast on WOCO Radio (107.1 FM, 1260 AM) or online at WOCO.Caster.FM.
Green Bay first baseman Riley Mihalik (Junior, Rider Univ.) led the offensive charge with four RBIs in tonight's action, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish. Shortstop Rudy Aguilar (Sophomore, St. Johns) posted a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of singles and a RBI double. Catcher Blaise Maris (Sophomore, Florida Tech) was 2-for-4 with two base-knocks. Mallards first baseman Jake Randa topped the Madison batting charts with a 3-for-4 mark at the plate with one double and two singles.
The Bullfrog bats were cooking early in the bottom half of the first inning with five runs on four hits to give the hosts a huge 5-0 boost. Green Bay's offensive surge began with a three-RBI double by Mihalik followed by a RBI fielder's choice by third baseman Ethan Ibarra (R-Junior, St. Cloud State). The explosion concluded with a run-scoring double by Aguilar.
Green Bay's huge inning would not affect Madison's confidence at the dish as the Mallards quickly responded with five unanswered tallies in the fourth inning to tie the contest at 5-5. The visitors scored one run each in the second and third frames before a three-run fourth inning knotted the score.
The Frogs soon answered in the following frame with four runs of their own to regain the lead at 9-5 and never looked back. After a strikeout to begin the bottom of the fourth, Green Bay compiled four straight hits in the critical offensive push. A RBI single by center fielder Cooper Morrison (Sophomore, UC Davis) got the Frog bats started followed by a two-run double by Leo Perez (Freshman, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) and a run-scoring single by Mihalik to cap-off the crucial frame.
The Mallards scored one run in the fifth, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Madison had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Green Bay right-handed pitcher Travis Kuhn (R-Freshman, San Diego) fanned Jayse McLean to record the save and the first Bullfrog victory of the summer.
Green Bay right-handed reliever Jason Applegate (Junior, Villanova) got the win, improving to 1-0. Applegate tossed four strong innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts and one earned run allowed. The Mallards had the bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth inning, but the VU Wildcat escaped the jam with only one run allowed on a sacrifice fly. Madison starting southpaw Brian Martinez took the loss, falling to 0-1. Kuhn earns his first save of the season after tallying three strikeouts in the ninth frame.
