La Crosse Loggers News Release
La Crosse, Wis. - The La Crosse Loggers continued their hot start to the 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over the Eau Claire Express Thursday night at Copeland Park and Event Center. The Loggers improved to 3-0 on the early season, fueled behind outstanding pitching and timely hitting in a game that saw only six combined hits between the two clubs.
The only scoring in the game came in the bottom of the third inning as the top of the Loggers' lineup rallied to push across a pair of runs. Leadoff man Bryce Blaum (Texas A&M) started the inning with a single to right field, scoring on the next pitch as Shane McGuire (San Diego) ripped a double to right field. After a pair of groundouts, McGuire came around to score on a Ryan Mantle (Creighton) two-out double to center. Kody Gardner (Sacramento City CC) and Ramon Padilla (Illinois Central CC) each added a hit during the contest, totaling five Logger hits in Thursday night's pitchers' duel.
Mason McMahon (UW-La Crosse) was impressive on the mound in his first start of the season for the Lumbermen, tossing 5.2 shutout, one-hit innings, in which he walked three and struck out eight. The right hander was relieved with two outs in the sixth by southpaw Jon Meyerring (Miami OH), who promptly escaped the inning with a groundball to second base. The lefty reliever carried the Loggers to the ninth inning, collecting two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched and not allowing a hit. Daylon Matthews (Sacramento City CC) came on to close the game for the Loggers, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to complete the shutout and pick up his first save of the season.
The Loggers will travel to Eau Claire tomorrow night for a 7:05 PM CT contest against the Express at Carson Park. The Lumbermen will look to remain perfect on the season before returning to Copeland Park for a pair of weekend games against Rochester.
