Arkansas Travelers News Release
Dr Pepper Ballpark, Frisco, TX - The Arkansas Travelers (2-9) dropped a pair of games to the Frisco RoughRiders (9-2) on Monday, losing a 1-0 affair in the opener before falling 6-4 in the nightcap. Frisco RHP Evan Reed (1-0) won the opener in his class AA debut allowing only four hits in five innings, while Steve Murphy knocked in the only run with a sacrifice fly. In the second game, Frisco broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning on back-to-back homers by Max Ramirez (3) and John Mayberry (2). The Travs are 1-7 in games decided by two runs or less.
GAME ONE RHP Dan Denham (0-1) made his Arkansas debut and battled through 3.1 innings walking five and giving up the game's only run on two hits. Leading off the second inning Chris Davis poked a single to left field and Taylor Teagarden drew a walk. The runners advanced when Ramirez hit a slow roller to Hainley Statia at shortstop. Murphy delivered a sacrifice fly to right to bring Davis for the only run.
While Reed was solid, he got a lucky break in the third inning when Coby Smith launched a high shot down the left-field line that hooked foul. Reed set down seven of the last eight batters he faced before handing the game to RHP Warner Madrigal. The former Angels' farmhand also dodged a bullet when Ben Johnson's drive with a man on in the sixth inning hooked foul outside the right-field pole. Madrigal got Johnson to pop out and retired the side in order in the seventh for his fourth save.
GAME TWO The Travs got out to a quick lead when Coby Smith began the game with a home run (1) to left field. Frisco came back to tie the game against RHP David Austen (0-1) in the first inning getting an infield hit from Elvis Andrus and an RBI double from Ramirez.
Riders RHP Jake Dittler set down seven straight after Smith's home run, but Cody Fuller hit a one-out single in the third, stole second base and took third when Smith singled to left. Statia put Arkansas up 2-1 with an RBI single to right field, then Dittler threw a wild pitch to score Smith for a 3-1 lead.
Once again Frisco answered against Austen getting a leadoff double from Andrus. John Mayberry hit a tapper to the left of the mound that 3B Corey Smith fielded and threw wild past first base allowing Andrus to score. Davis then swatted a two-run shot (2) to right field giving Frisco a 4-3 lead.
Corey Smith reached in the fifth with a one-out walk from Dittler then took third base on a well-executed hit-and-run single from Statia. With two outs, Corey Smith hit a hard foul ball that nailed Coby Smith on his left shin while leading off the base in foul territory. Smith left the game under his own power and was replaced by Cliff Remole. Corey Smith then tied the game with an RBI single to left field. RHP Danny Touchet (1-0) replaced Dittler and pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn the win.
Austen returned for the fifth inning and surrendered consecutive homers to Ramirez and Mayberry giving the Riders a 6-4 lead.
Time of game in the opener was 1:52 while the second game took 1:54. The paid attendance was announced at 5,807.
