Frias Dive Brings Cup Back To Lancaster

August 23, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Vladimir Frias saved the game, and the Community Cup, not once but twice with his glove Thursday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers notched a 6-4 win over the York Revolution at People's Bank Park.

The win was Lancaster's 10th in the series, enough to win the 2018 War of the Roses.

With two outs and two on in the bottom of the eighth inning, Frias dove into the hole to stop a ground ball off the bat of Tyler Clark. He scrambled to his feet and barely forced Welington Dotel at third for the final out on a controversial call.

York, which got its leadoff man on base in the last six innings, gave it another try in the ninth. Jared Mitchell and Alexi Casilla opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Melky Mesa lifted a fly ball to deep right, moving Mitchell to third.

Closer Matt Reynolds faced slugger Telvin Nash as the potential winning run. After battling at 2-2, Nash scooted a ground ball up the middle. Again Frias dove, made the stop and a backhanded flip to Tyler Bortnick. Bortnick relayed to first for a game ending double play. Reynolds earned his 24th save.

The Barnstormers overturned an early 2-1 York lead with five in the top of the fourth. K.C. Hobson started the rally with a double and took third on a bunt single by Frias. Frias stole second before Rico Noel grounded a two-run single up the middle.

Carl Brice (0-1) was replaced by Jailen Peguero. Noel stole second. Darian Sandford reached on an error, and Tyler Bortnick was hit by a pitch. Trayvon Robinson knocked a two-run double down the left field line for a 5-2 lead, and Blake Gailen's RBI grounder scored Lancaster's final run.

The Revs climbed back into the game on two singles plus a balk and wild pitch committed by Huascar Brazoban in the sixth. Clark walked, and Mitchell singled him to third in the seventh, but the Revs scored only once on a double play grounder by Casilla.

John Anderson (4-2) gave the Barnstormers a solid start, lasting five innings. The lefty allowed five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out six.

The Barnstormers entertain the Somerset Patriots on Friday night to start a three-game series. Ty'Relle Harris (0-0) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander Stephen Perakslis (0-0). The first 1,000 fans will receive foam footballs. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel at 6:45.

NOTES: Robinson extended his hitting streak to nine games...He went 8-for-17 in the series with four doubles and four RBI and is 14-for-32 in the streak...Noel has hit safely in eight straight...Reynolds saved his 24th, tying him for the fifth top single season total in club history...Sandford stole his 62nd base in the first inning, the top season by an Atlantic Leaguer since Wayne Lydon stole 66 for Somerset in 2010.
