May 18, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Pacific Coast League announced today that Jon Singleton of the Fresno Grizzlies and Tim Cooney of the Memphis Redbirds have been named the Player and Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 11-17.
Jon Singleton recorded a league-high 23 RBIs in seven games, becoming the first player in the past ten years in the PCL to drive in over 20 runs in a week. Ten of his RBIs came Wednesday at Albuquerque, where he set a new club record for the Grizzlies and was one RBI away from the PCL's modern era record. The first baseman went 4-for-6 that day with two home runs, including a grand slam in the second inning. He finished the week with three grand slams out of his PCL-high five home runs. Singleton also compiled ten hits, eight runs, and had the third-most totals bases for the week with 25. The 23-year-old is batting .263 for the season and leads the league with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.
The 2015 season is Singleton's seventh in professional baseball, having been drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. The Los Angeles native was traded to the Houston Astros in 2011, and made his major league debut with the club on June 3, 2014. The Player of the Week accolade is the second he has obtained from the PCL in his career, with his previous coming in 2014 as a member of the Oklahoma City RedHawks.
Tim Cooney possessed the lowest ERA (0.61) and opponents' batting average (.143) among PCL pitchers with two starts this week. The left-handed pitcher also maintained a 0.68 WHIP, struck out nine batters, and recorded one win. The victory happened Saturday against Omaha, in which he combined with teammate Marcus Hatley to throw a one-hit shutout. Cooney went 7.2 innings, while accumulating six strikeouts and did not allow a hit until the top of the seventh. In his start Monday vs. New Orleans, he tossed five scoreless frames before yielding a run in the sixth to earn a no decision. The St. Louis Cardinals' No. 10 prospect has a 3-2 record this year to go along with a 3.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
Cooney, 24, was drafted in the third round by the Cardinals in 2012 out of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Philadelphia native made his first career appearance in the major leagues on April 30, 2015, at Busch Stadium starting against the Phillies. Cooney now owns four Pitcher of the Week awards in his career, including two from the PCL. His previous weekly accolade came on June 2, 2014, after throwing his first career complete-game shutout with the Redbirds.
