Tim Cooney Named PCL Pitcher of the Week
May 18, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis Redbirds starting pitcher Tim Cooney has been named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for the May 11 - May 17 period.
Cooney went 1-0 with a league-leading 0.66 ERA (1er/13.2ip) and .143 average against (7-for-49) in a pair of home starts last week against the New Orleans Zephyrs and Omaha Storm Chasers.
Last Monday in his first outing, Cooney allowed one run on six hits in seven innings in Memphis' 2-1 win in extra innings.
On Saturday, the left-hander fired 7 2/3 shutout innings of one-hit ball as the Redbirds blanked the Omaha Storm Chasers, 5-0.
Cooney's only hit allowed on the evening was a one-out bloop single to Casey Kotchman with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Marcus Hatley hurled a perfect 1 1/3 scoreless frames in relief to preserve Memphis' 10th combined one-hitter in franchise history. Cooney finished with two walks, one hit batter, and six strikeouts. Sixty-six of his 104 pitches were thrown for strikes.
Last season, Cooney earned PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for the May 26-June 1 period after falling one out short of throwing the first no-hitter in franchise history on May 29, 2014 vs. Iowa. That night, he allowed one hit (Arismendy Alcantara), two walks, and fanned seven in the first complete game shutout of his career.
Overall for Memphis this season, Cooney is 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA (13er/39.0ip) and 26 strikeouts in six starts. The left-hander ranks second in the PCL in WHIP (0.97) and third among PCL starters in average against (.210), fewest walks per nine innings (1.85), and fewest baserunners per nine innings (9.69).
Cooney, a member of St. Louis' 40-man roster, had his contract purchased on April 30, where he made his Major League debut at Busch Stadium.
The PCL award is the fourth weekly honor of Cooney's four-year career and the first earned by a Redbirds player in 2015. Cooney won the PCL Pitcher of the Week honors in May 2014 for his near no-hitter.
He entered the 2015 season rated by Baseball America as the Cardinals' No. 7 prospect while also possessing the "Best Control" in the organization. He was drafted by St. Louis in the 3rd round of the June, 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Wake Forest University.
