Following being struck on the left forearm by a comebacker, Justin Nicolino left Saturday's game after throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one run (earned) on two hits. X-rays on Nicolino's forearm came back negative.
With Nicolino's early departure, the Suns had to call on the bullpen earlier than anticipated, turning to the right-hander Jheyson Manzueta (W, 1-0) who joined the Suns on May 1st.
Manzueta earned the win for the Suns on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of work.
After joining the Suns earlier in the day, Reid Redman (H, 1) made a brilliant first impression in his Double-A debut by not allowing a single hit while striking out a pair of batters over the course of 2.1 scoreless innings.
Jacksonville trailed 2-0 through four innings, but received an RBI from Wilfredo Gimenez, Austin Nola and Isaac Galloway in a three-run top of the fifth inning to give the Suns a 3-2 lead.
The Suns would grab a critical run in the eighth inning on an Alfredo Silverio RBI double.
Nick Wittgren (SV, 2) earned the save after allowing a lone run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Williams Perez (L, 2-3) took the loss for Mississippi after allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits in 7.0 innings of work. Perez finished with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
The Suns and Braves will be back at it at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday for the finale of this five-game series at Trustmark Park, before heading to Montgomery for a five-game series with the Biscuits. Jacksonville sends out the right-hander Jose Urena (1-2, 6.66) for Sunday's finale, while Mississippi counters with the righty J.R. Graham (0-1, 1.86).
Suns fans can listen to Sunday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or throughwww.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET starting with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show on Suns Sunday.
