Mobile BayBears News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL -- The Mobile BayBears outlast the Birmingham Barons 5-3 in 17 innings Friday night at Regions Field. The win is Mobile's third in a row and clinched the series for the BayBears who have now one seven of their last eight games. The 17 innings were just two shy of the BayBears record for most innings played. Mobile played a 19 inning contest with the Huntsville Stars in 2000. The five hour and 25 minute game time was 10 minutes short of the franchise record of five hours and 35 minutes also set against the Stars in the same game 14 years ago.

LHP Andrew Chafin had to settle for a no decision, allowing just one earned run on six hits, walking two and striking out six in seven full innings of work. Chafin's seven innings would end up not even accounting for half of the game as the bullpen would pitch the remaining 10 frames of the extra inning marathon.

Garret Weber hit his first homer of the season in the sixth inning. The solo shot put Mobile up 1-0. The Barons tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the seventh inning and the scored would remain 1-1 into the 14th. In the top half of the 14th inning, with runners at second and third base with two outs and a 3-2 count at the plate, Raywilly Gomez connected on a two-run double, giving the BayBears a 3-1 lead.

The Barons would not go quietly, tying the game again with two runs in the bottom half of the 14th to extend the extra-inning battle. In the top of the 17th inning, Gomez was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Steve Rodriguez would pitch run for Gomez at first base. After two straight outs, Sean Jameison came to the plate with two outs and smacked a ground-rule double into right field that scored Rodriguez, giving the BayBears a 4-3 advantage. Mike Freeman would drive in Jamieson with a RBI base hit in the next at bat, giving the BayBears a 5-3 advantage.

RHP Willy Paredes improved to (2-0), earning the win with two scoreless innings in the 15th and 16th. RHP Justin Fitzgerald was credited with his first save since 2008, giving him six for his career after recording the final three outs in the bottom half of the 17th inning.

Saturday night, the Barons and BayBears meet again at Regions Field with first pitch at 6:30 PM. LHP Scott Snodgress (1-2, 6.08) will take the hill for Birmingham while RHP Mike Lee (3-2, 3.90) will get the nod for Mobile. The BayBears return home for a five game series with the Mississippi Braves beginning Monday, May 5, at 7:05 PM.
