Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- The Jacksonville Suns defeated the Mississippi Braves 4-3 at Trustmark Park Saturday night, snapping the M-Braves four-game winning streak. With the M-Braves leading the series three-games-to-one, the Suns and Braves square off in the series finale at 1:00 PM Sunday.
Mississippi (13-16) scored three runs on seven hits but committed three errors. Jacksonville (13-16) plated four runs on six hits and one error. Kyle Kubitza led the M-Braves with a two-hit night at the plate-the only M-Brave with a multi-hit game.
The M-Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Mycal Jones led off with a double to left field, then took third on a ground out. An RBI-singled off the bat of Joe Leonard drove in the game's first run with two outs.
In the bottom of the third, Jones walked and scored on a Cedric Hunter double to right field, giving the M-Braves a 2-0 advantage.
Jacksonville took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Rich Poythress singled and Ryan Fisher walked to start the inning. Wilfredo Gimenez followed with a double to left field, driving home Poythress. A ground out brought home Ryan Fisher to tie the game at 2-2. Isaac Galloway then singled to plate Gimenez.
The Suns added an unearned run in the eighth. Galloway reached on an error by Kubitza and took second on an errant pickoff attempt. He then came in to score on Alfredo Silverio's double to left field, making it a 4-2 game.
The Braves added a run in the ninth when Kubitza doubled and took third on a fly out. Braeden Schlehuber then grounded out, allowing Kubitza to score and make it a one-run game. The tying run was left stranded at first.
Jheyson Manzueta (1-0) held the Braves to one earned run on three hits and a walk in 3.1 innings pitched to pick up his first win for the Suns. Williams Perez (2-3) tossed seven innings for the M-Braves, limiting the Suns to three earned runs on just three hits and a couple walks. He struck out six batters and took the loss.
Nick Wittgren (S, 2) tossed the final frame to pick up the save. Justin Nicolino started and worked 2.1 innings for the Suns. He left the game with an undisclosed injury. Nicolino gave up one earned run on two hits.
In Sunday afternoon's season finale at Trustmark Park, M-Braves right-hander J.R. Graham (0-1, 1.86) counters Jacksonville righty Jose Urena (1-2, 6.66). First pitch is set for 1:00 PM. Gates open at 12:00 PM.
