Florence Y'alls News Release

MARION, IL - It happened for just the first time all year for the Florence Freedom as they used four different pitchers to shut out the Southern Illinois Miners and win 10-0 Sunday night at Rent One Park to avoid the sweep.

The Freedom had plenty of offense to compliment Moises Melendez, Andy Clark, John Tesseyman and David Odquist.

Johnny Welch drove home the game's first run in the third inning against Miners starter Ryan Bird. Florence put up three more runs in the inning including a two-out, two-run double by Erold Andrus to make it 4-0.

With a four run lead to back him, Melendez struck out five Miners in his first 3 2/3 innings. But after two men reached with two outs in the fourth, the left-hander had to be taken out due to an injury. Clark came in to finish off the Miners inning.

Florence jumped back on the Miners in the fifth with Welch's ninth homer of the season to make it 5-0. Back-to-back two out doubles by Billy Mottram and Andrus finished off Bird (6-3) as he allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

It was Bird's second straight loss to the Freedom and third overall after winning 17 straight decisions dating back to 2008 when he was named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Year.

Leading 6-0 the offensive attack was at it again in the sixth when Ryan Basham drove his third hit out to right field for his first home run since June 21. The homer capped off a three run inning and the Freedom then led 9-0.

Basham wasn't done as the designated hitter hit his second homer of the game and sixth of the season, a blast to right field in the eighth to conclude the scoring for the Freedom and made it 10-0. He finished 4-5 with two RBI.

Clark (3-4) picked up the win going 2 1/3 innings in just his second appearance from the bullpen this season. It was his first victory since improving to 2-1 way back on June 14 when Clark was a starter.

The Freedom (24-26) put to end a sixth game road losing streak with the win and will travel back home to take on the Evansville Otters Monday night at Champion Window Field. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
