Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums used a pair of homeruns to help them to a 4-3 win and a sweep of the two-time defending Frontier League Champion Windy City ThunderBolts.
Anthony D'Alfonso got the Beach Bums started with a solo homer deep to right off Windy City starter Ross Stout. The homerun came on a 1-0 pitch in the bottom of the second and was the first as a professional for D'Alfonso.
Gilberto Mejia tied the contest with a homer of his own in the top of the fourth for Windy City. The homer was his fifth of the season and also went deep to right on a 1-1 offering from Beach Bums starter Kevin Reese.
The Beach Bums used the longball again in the fifth inning to take control. Brandon McArthur led off the inning with a single into left, his first hit as a professional. Andrew Franco followed by depositing a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right to put the Beach Bums ahead 3-1. The homer was also the first as a pro for Franco. Brad Miller and Andrew Stafford each singled as Traverse City posted four straight hits to start the inning. Miller scored later on a two-out single off the bat Sean Hoorelbeke.
Windy City attempted to rally in the ninth inning. David Hurst entered in place of Kevin Reese. Hurst retired the first two hitters of the inning before Nick Hall doubled and pinch hitter Wilson Matos singled. Tyler Farrar tripled to deep center to score both runners. Jeff Williams, who had saved the last two games, entered with the tying run at third and struck out Dan Jordan to close the game and record his league leading 13th save.
Kevin Reese threw eight innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. He walked one and matched his career high by striking out five. Traverse City finished with 11 hits in the contest. Andrew Franco, in his debut with the team, finished 3-for-3 with a double, a homerun, and two RBIs. Brad Miller and Anthony D'Alfonso had two hits apiece.
The Beach Bums will continue the homestand by opening a series tomorrow night with the Rockford RiverHawks at 7:05pm at Wuerfel Park. All-Star RHP Brett Bostelman (5-2, 3.21) will make his first start of the second half for the Beach Bums while Rockford will counter with RHP Brett Durand (5-3, 4.76). TBA Credit Union will have a food drive before the contest for the Father Fred Foundation.
