Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick came up on the wrong side of the first extra innings game at Harry Grove Stadium this season. The Kinston Indians bested the Keys, 2-1, in 12 innings to win the series. Prior to Sunday's game, Frederick was 6-0 on Sundays and 4-0 in rubbermatches. With the loss, Frederick fell to 26-18 on the year while Kinston improved to 23-21.
The Keys struck first on the day. Frederick had two hits in the first inning both on bunts. LF Xavier Avery led off with a bunt single. Following an Alex Castillo passed ball that moved Avery to second, CF Kyle Hudson bunted for a hit. With men on the corners, RF Miguel Abreu brought home Avery on sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Kinston tied up the game in the top of the third on an Alex Castillo RBI single. Castillo's single brought home 1B Doug Pickens.
With the scored tied at 1 after three, it was time for the bullpens to shine.
LHP Cole McCurry made his first relief appearance since April 4, 2008 and he was dominant. McCurry threw six scoreless innings and allowed just two Indians to reach base. He struck out a season-high eight in his outing.
Kinston's bullpen of Travis Turek, Brian Grening, Matt Langwell, and Cory Burns were just as effective. The four of them combined to throw seven scoreless innings.
The Indians were able to get a run across in the 12th inning. RHP Sean Gleason retired the first two batters he faced but the following two would each single to rightfield. With men on the corners, 3B Kyle Bellows hit a tapper back to the mound. Gleason knocked down the grounder but get a grip of the ball as it lay on the ground. 2B Jason Kipnis scored from third as he proved to be the winning run.
In the bottom of the 12th, C Brian Ward led off with a walk but would end up stranded on third as RHP Cory Burns struck out Avery looking to end the game.
Frederick finished the week long homestand 4-3 but lost the series to Kinston.
The Keys head to Wilmington on Monday night for the start of a week long roadtrip. LHP Nate Nery (3-3, 3.86) will start for Frederick while the Blue Rocks will toss RHP Alex Caldera (3-2, 2.89). First pitch is set for 6:35 from Frawley Stadium.
Frederick will return home on Monday, May 31. The Keys will host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 4:00 p.m. on Memorial Day. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
