THE HILLCATS: Winston-Salem crushed Lynchburg 11-4 last night in the middle-game of the three-game set at BB&T Ballpark...The Hillcats have lost nine of their last 11 games, are 3-12 in their last 15 games played and they have dropped nine games under .500 for the first time this season...Today the Cats try and avoid the second sweep of the season at the hands of the Dash in the final game of the series and the third of six in a row on the road...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: Lynchburg is 0-5 against Winston-Salem this season after dropping the first two games in this series...The Hillcats and Dash met for the first time last weekend in Lynchburg, and the Dash swept the three-game series...Last season the Cats went 11-9 against the Dash and were 5-5 in Winston-Salem...Lynchburg holds the all-time advantage in the series with Winston-Salem 155-148, and they are 68-81 in the Triad...
A ONE-SIDED AFFAIR: Through two games in this three-game set the Hillcats are getting outscored 24-7...Last night the Dash had 19 hits (the most the Hillcats have allowed this season), five home runs (the Cats had not allowed more than two in a game this season and last night was the first time an opponent has homered twice in an inning) and eight extra-base hits...The 13 runs Winston-Salem scored on Friday night were the most Lynchburg has allowed this season, the ten-run difference was the biggest loss of the season and it matched their biggest blown lead this year (three runs)...The Hillcats are now 0-5 against the Dash and in those five games they have committed 10 errors that have led to 16 unearned runs...
FALLING INTO PLACE: OF Josh Fellhauer went 3-for-5 last night with three doubles, an RBI and a run...He has now hit in 10 of his last 11 games, and over that time he is batting .422 (19-for-45) with five doubles, a homer, three RBI, 10 runs, two walks and two steals...He has raised his average from .255 to .299 in those 11 games...
WHEN DUTY CALLS: C Jordan Wideman became the first Hillcats position player to pitch this season when he worked a perfect bottom of the eighth inning...He hit as high as 84 on the scoreboard radar gun and set down the side in order...He stayed in the game and became the first pitcher to hit for himself this season when he struck out to end the game in the top of the ninth...Wideman had not pitched in a competitive game since high school...
UP THROUGH THE QUAD TO THE GYMNASIUM: Last night C Devin Mesoraco 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run to keep alive his consecutive on-base safely streak...He has now reached safely in his last 28 games (and hit in 24 of those)...Over that time he is batting .358 (38-for-106) with seven doubles, two triples, seven homers, 22 RBI, 18 runs scored, 14 walks and an OBP of .447...His on-base streak is the longest by a Hillcat this season and Friday night he broke the longest streak this year in the CL (26 games, OF Brandon Short, Winston-Salem)...Mesoraco is now tied for sixth in the league in batting average (.338), third in home runs (9), fourth in on-base percentage (.421) and second in slugging percentage (.620)...
BATTLING BUCK: INF Alex Buchholz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run Friday night...He has now hit in a season-best 11 straight games, matching the longest streak by a Hillcat this season (OF Josh Fellauer)...Over that time he is 17-for-41 (.415) with four doubles, a home run, 11 RBI, five runs and two walks...He has raised his average over that stretch from .250 to .297...Friday night he went 1-for-1 with men in scoring position and he is now batting .476 (20-for-42) with RISP...
TODAY'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Charles Leesman was selected by the White Sox in the 11th round of the 2008 draft out of Xavier University...His final season with the Musketeers he went 2-6 with a 5.32 ERA in 13 starts...That same year he made his professional debut with Bristol where he tossed two games, earned a save, and did not allow a run in five and 1/3 innings...He also made one start for full season Low-A Kannapolis that season and he did not allow an earned run in four and 2/3 innings of action...Last season he returned to the Intimidators and posted a 13-5 mark with a 3.08 ERA in 27 starts...This season he progressed to Advanced-A Winston-Salem and has gone 5-1 with a 4.85 ERA in eight starts for the Dash...Leesman entered the season as the 27th ranked prospect in the White Sox minor league system according to Baseball America...Today will be his first appearance against Lynchburg...
