Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - Not a pitcher, but pitchers dueled in the Growlers 4-1 loss to the Wisconsin Woodchucks.
Matt Frawley (Purdue), who picked up a no-decision after leaving with a tie game after the seventh, only allowed five hits, one earned run and eight strikeouts. With this outing, Frawley has now lowered his ERA to a sound 2.77.
Wisconsin starter, Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) allowed only two hits, one walk and struck out six Growler batters.
The lone Kalamazoo (7-24) run came quickly in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter, Kory Brown (BGSU) hit a ball to the Miller Lite Party Deck for a solo home run.
Kalamazoo's lead only lasted until the third inning as Wisconsin (11-19) scored a run off of an Albee Weiss (Cal State Northridge) single.
1-1 stayed the score until the top of the eighth inning. With Frawley gone, Nathan Coakley (St.Francis) on the mound, no one on, no one out, Yusuke Akitoshi (Cal-State Northridge) hit an opposite field solo shot over that short fence in left field that has seen many a long ball this season.
Kalamazoo kept it a game, 2-1, until the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded, one out, Akitoshi hit a comebacker to Coakley for what seemed to be out number two when a botched throw by the pitcher bounced off Akitoshi's head and allowed two runs to score.
The Growlers went quietly in the bottom of the ninth, going 1-2-3 to Woodchuck reliever Zach Stone (UC-Davis).
With the losing streak up six games, the Growlers look to end it tomorrow in the finale game of the Wisconsin series.
