Bullfrogs Focused on Bulldozing Bombers in Doubleheader
June 25, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- Paramount implications sit in front of the Green Bay Bullfrogs (15-12) who host the Battle Creek Bombers (12-17) for two games starting at 5:35PM from Joannes Stadium. In game one, Alex Martinez (RHP/De Anza) starts and Tommy Strunc (RHP/Creighton) toes the slab in game two.
Both of these contests will be seven inning games, the back-end of the twinbill will start approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the first.
Today is the City of Green Bay Kids day featuring the ZOOperstars! Excitingly, it is also Star Wars Night. Kids that participate in City activities with a voucher or that adorn a Stars War costume can earn a free ticket. One ticket will get you into both games of tonight's doubleheader action.
Last Game: Chinooks Sent Packing By Bullfrogs, 7-1
There is no doubt that the Bullfrogs are starting to piece together their collection of talent. Some players have said it's the most talented team they have worked with in their careers, an ode to a mixture of youth, returners, and veterans on a team that has amassed a 3-1 home stand so far.
They used those elements to glide past the Chinooks, 7-1 last night. The pitching got back to life, meaning complete dominance. Nathan Disch (RHP/Jacksonville) picked up his first win of the season lasting 5IP/5H/1R(1ER)/6K-BB. He gave way to another sterling bullpen effort.
Matt McCarthy (LHP/Penn State) got ahead of hitters and rolled to a scoreless 1 2/3 IP along with Connor Donovan (RHP/Lehigh) who logged 1 1/3 with no runs allowed. Jake Stolley (LHP/Northwestern) ended the game with a two strikeout ninth inning, no runs.
Robb Paller (Columbia) continued to hit the ball hard as he finished with two hits and scored a run, the fifth time in as many games he has scored at least a run. He now has tallied eight runs overall. Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) drove home his 10th RBI, despite having just played in his eighth contest, and has an RBI or more in seven straight games.
It was nice to see another solid game from Mikey Durate (UC-Irvine) at the plate. He served a two-RBI double down the right-field line as Green Bay scored four in the third inning. Duarte, along with Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) and Jack Strunc (Washington State) has melded together a brilliant middle infield.
Martinez, Strunc Take The Ball In Double-Header
A double-header format was no issue for the Bullfrogs on June 15th when they tacked off two wins, 3-0, and 5-0, over Wausau's Woodchucks.
Within the double-header scenario, the Bullfrogs have an opportunity with a Kenosha loss to gain 1.5 games in the South Division standings. The Kingfish play Madison at Simmons Field this evening.
Alex Martinez gets the ball game one and has endured five innings in each of his last three outings. When he's working well, he supplements a slider into his arsenal that can be thrown in any count. He can touch the radar gun for upwards of 90 MPH.
Tommy Strunc receives his first start today. His location mishaps are his biggest obstacle. Strunc has walked eight batters in 6 2/3IP, but had his first appearance without a free pass on June 23rd against Lakeshore.
Strunc has great movement to his offerings. When he pitches his fastball for strikes, it allows him to showcase a breaking ball that can close out hitters in a hurry. There is a reason that Strunc was the 2014 Big East Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and this start may allow him to find that form through more innings of work.
It is nice to know that the defense is also not making (as many) errors. Over the last 13 games, the Bullfrogs have had no more than two errors in any game.
With Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) and Desi Ammons (Belmont) behind the plate, pitchers have found great targets and leadership. Guardascione caught two would-be base runners breaking for second last night, and calmed down starter Nathan Disch through difficult situations with runners on base.
Over the last five games, Green Bay has now won four and take on a 12-17 Battle Creek team who has lost six of their past 10.
A Look At The Battle Creek Bombers
Last time Battle Creek came to the Jo' they allowed 10 runs, seven hits, committed three errors, and lost. Starter Layne Bruner (Washington State) only went two innings and after four walks and as many runs was pulled.
Since, Battle Creek has fallen out of the graces of a first-half playoff hunt, in part due to an inept offense that has plated just five runs over their most recent three-game stretch.
If there is a hitter to watch it might be new arrival, Steven Wells Jr. (Florida State). In two games, Wells is 3-for-6, hitting cleanup as a corner outfielder.
Lin Li (National Taiwan Sports University) has also hit well for Battle Creek. He had three multi-hit games from June 19-21 and has only struck out once in his last six playing second base.
Pitching for the Bombers first is Alex Hermeling (RHP/Louisiana-Monroe). He has been Battle Creek's unrelenting ace. He worked three straight complete games from May 31-June 14th. His 0.81 ERA is third in the Northwoods League and he has only had 17 hits against him.
This tall order for the Bullfrogs will be matched by another great opposing starter game two, Andrew Mitchell (LHP/Delgado C.C.). This New Orleans native has a 2.79 ERA in 19 1/3 IP with 12IP/1ER over a pair of recent starts.
The Bullfrogs finish out the home stand with Battle Creek before traveling to C.O. Brown Stadium for game on June 27-28th this weekend.
Single game tickets are on sale now. Visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com to purchase tickets. The Bullfrogs' business hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
