Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - Battering their way to a 3-0 victory Wednesday night in Wisconsin Rapids thanks to Jason Goldstein's (Illinois) first home run of the season, the Madison Mallards (18-12) on Thursday will look to capture sole possession of first place in the Northwoods League's South Division with a win over the Kenosha Kingfish (19-11) at Simmons Field. Tonight will be first of a two-game set between Madison and Kenosha, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Play-by-play coverage will be provided by 100.5 FM ESPN Madison.
Last night marked the eighth win in their nine most recent contests for the Mallards, who for the first time saw a runner reach base safely in every inning. Madison's lineup was unable to convert those baserunners into runs until the sixth inning, however, when Goldstein plated himself and Jean Ramirez (Illinois State) with a two-run blast. Dalton D'Spain (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) turned in his best start for the Mallards prior to Goldstein's go-ahead home-run, striking out nine across six innings of shutout ball. Mike Kaelin (Buffalo) notched his fourth save with a scoreless ninth frame.
Tonight, A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina) will shoot to continue a recent stretch of dominance by Mallards starting pitchers - 0.92 ERA, 33:5 K/BB ratio over their last 39.1 innings, combined - when he tabs his fourth starting gig of the season. The 6-foot-3 right-hander stymied the Kingfish on June 19 at the Duck Pond, ceding no runs across six frames in which he walked none and disposed of five via strikeout en route to his first winning decision of the summer. Overall, Bogucki brings a 1-2 record, 4.39 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 10:2 K/BB ratio and into tonight's pivotal series opener in Kenosha.
To counter, the Kingfish tonight will call upon right-handed pitcher Josh Serio (UW-Parkside) to make his sixth start of the 2015 season. The 6-foot-1 native of Greenfield, Wis., was dealt his first losing decision of the summer June 19 against the Mallards, allowing three earned runs across five innings in which he both walked and struck out a trio of hitters. Serio's June 7 outing against Donnie Scott and company yielded better results, whiffing 10 Mallards hitters over six frames with one earned run allowed on his way to a winning decision. Overall, he is 4-1 with a 1.28 ERA.
Tyler Catching Fire - While Logan Regnier (Central Michigan) and Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) have put together impressive seasons at the plate, the Mallards have also benefitted from a hot-swinging Scott Tyler (Ball State). The 6-foot-2 corner outfielder/first baseman went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's victory, extending his current hit streak to five games. Tyler's .476 batting average (10-for-21) since June 16 is a team-best mark.
Thursday's Roster Move - The Mallards have re-added right-handed pitcher Tyler Frohwirth (Minnesota State) to their 2015 active roster. Frohwirth, who logged four strikeouts in 3.2 innings on a temporary contract with the Mallards earlier this season, will join the Mallards on a full-time contract for the remainder of the summer.
The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond tomorrow (Friday, June 26) for the finale of their two-game set with the Kingfish. Friday night will be Oscar Mayer Hot Dog Appreciation Night and Social Media Night at the stadium, featuring a Maynard Bobblehead and Quench Gum Giveaway at the front gates while supplies last.
