Calgary Vipers News Release

Struggling against starter Alexander Francisco the Calgary Vipers were defeated 10-1 by the Edmonton Capitals before 1742 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Francisco (6-0) threw seven innings against the Snakes without surrendering an earned run or walk for the victory. Breaking open a 1-1 game the Capitals scored four runs in the seventh inning and five more in the eighth to turn the contest into a blowout. With the loss the Vipers see their eight game winning streak snapped and fall into second place in the North Division at 8-2. Overall Calgary's Golden Baseball League record is now 31-22.

Despite picking up the loss Mark Michael (2-2) was excellent in throwing six and two-third innings, striking out seven, and allowing four runs with two of the tallies scoring after he left the game.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Ryan Stevenson blooped a ball into shallow left field that got after from Drew Miller for a triple and he scored when Miller committed a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.

Calgary quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as with two outs Jonny Kaplan tripled and scored on a passed ball.

The Vipers got a big play defensively in the sixth inning as with one out and a runner on first a single was shot out to centerfielder Julio Ramirez who accurately threw to third base where Caonabo Cosme beautifully scooped the ball out of the dirt and applied the tag for a big second out.

The Capitals broke the deadlock in the seventh inning when with two outs Larry Bigbie walked, Tom Collaro doubled for a run batted in, Cliff Brumbaugh was intentionally walked, and out of the bullpen Jorge Vasquez gave up a three run homer to Matt Rogelstad for a 5-1 advantage.

Edmonton broke the game wide open in the eighth as Francisco singled, Ryan Stevenson doubled, Enrique Cruz singled home one, Bigbie walked to load the bases, and Collaro blasted a grand slam for a 10-1 lead.
