St. George RoadRunners News Release
TUCSON, AZ - The St. George RoadRunners looked poised to take the first game of a weekend series leading 8-4 heading into the bottom half of the eighth. The Tucson Toros had a much different view and scored five times on the combination of Mitch Arnold and Jose Obispo to down the RoadRunners 9-8 on Friday night at Hi-Corbett Field.
For the second time this season, the Toros scratched and clawed from four runs down in the waning frames - the only difference is they completed the rally to go ahead and eventually win. With two on and two out, Wally Backman's single to right field was misplayed by Yosvany Almario to allowing the tying and game-winning runs to score.
Offensively, St. George came to play knocking out 15 hits scoring eight runs. Vic Buttler was 4-for-6 with an RBI double and a walk. Jermy Acey continued his torrent hitting with three more singles. Every man in the starting lineup carded a hit including pitcher Reed Dickert who was pulled after five innings allowing four runs on eight hits.
Monte Mansfield and Kyle Boggio each threw scoreless frames to keep the Toros at bay before the fateful final frame.
Casey Raisbeck had a critical two-run pinch hit single in a four-run sixth inning to give St. George their second lead of the night. Earlier, Nick Fitzgerald crushed a solo shot (3) to center field for a home run.
Jesse Orosco, Jr. scattered a run on four hits, but earns the relief win (3-1) while closer Emiliano Fruto wrapped up save number eight closing out St. George in the ninth.
The RoadRunners dropped to 2-6 in the second half while Tucson climbed to 3-6 in the South.
Game two of the series is Saturday night at 8:05pm MDT from Tucson. LHP Brian Holliday will get the ball for St. George while Tucson starts RHP James Garcia.
