Vipers Draw First Blood

July 24, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Calgary, AB - We're not in Edmonton anymore.

The Capitals found that out fast and furious on Friday night when they played their first game on the road in 19 days. Even though it was just a few hours down the highway in Calgary, the Caps were out of the friendly confines of TELUS Field and into the hostile home of the Vipers.

The home side attacked their visitors for nine runs in the first inning of the first of six straight games between the provincial rivals. The Caps also had two runs in the first, and battled back and won the final eight innings 3-1, but the damage was done as Calgary cruised to a 10-5 victory.

One of the lone bright spots on the night for the Caps was the hitting clinic put on by first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh, who knocked in all five Edmonton runs with a trio of home runs. Brumbaugh's three dingers gave him 17 on the Golden Baseball League season, putting him four ahead of the next closest slugger.

Caps starting pitcher Chris Little had a nightmare of a first inning, surrendering nine earned runs on six hits and four walks, and only retiring two Vipers before getting replaced by Jesse Oster. Four Vipers drove in two runs on the night - right fielder Jonny Kaplan, short stop Guillermo Reyes, left fielder Drew Miller and second baseman Jorge Mejia.

With the win, the Vipers (8-1) took over first place in the North in the second half of the GBL season, while the Caps (5-1) suffered their first loss of the second half. Edmonton's five-game winning streak was snapped, but they've still won 18 of their last 20.

The teams play three more times in Calgary - Saturday and Sunday at 1:35 p.m. and Monday at 7:05 p.m. - before heading to Edmonton for games on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
