Iowa Wolves News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN (January 19, 2014) - The Fort Wayne Mad Ants survived a tough challenge from the Iowa Energy to earn a 111-109 victory. Fort Wayne needed a 35-26 advantage in the fourth quarter to get the weekend sweep.
Iowa came out very strong in the first quarter behind six points from Jackie Carmichael to take a 26-22 advantage. The Ants kept it close in the second quarter with Trey McKinney-Jones getting hot and scoring ten points in the quarter, and the Energy took a 52-51 lead into halftime.
The Energy jumped out of the gate in the third quarter and took an eight point lead off of two consecutive three pointers from Kalin Lucas at the top of the key. But Fort Wayne fought back to tie it at 75 when Tony Mitchell hit a three pointer of his own from the deep corner. Iowa was not discouraged, however, and they threw a punch right back at the Ants by going on a 8-1 run to end the quarter and retake a seven point lead behind three pointers from Chris Allen and Moses Ehambe.
It looked bleak for the home team when Allen hit two free throws in the middle of the fourth quarter to push the lead to ten for Iowa, but Tony Mitchell and Sadiel Rojas took the game over from there. Rojas scored four points and Mitchell scored eight points during a 16-3 run that was capped by a thunderous tip jam from Mitchell and gave the Mad Ants a one point lead. Kyle Randall hit a huge three to push the Mad Ants lead to 106-102 with 1:53 to go, and the Ants were able to close it out from there.
For Iowa, perennial All Star Othyus Jeffers scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Chris Allen and Kalin Lucas both added 21 points for the Energy.
The Ants were led by Trey McKinney-Jones, who had 24 points, and Tony Mitchell who had 23. Sadiel Rojas had his second consecutive monster game with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
