Springfield Armor News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After entering halftime deadlocked at 53, the Canton Charge (13-8) outscored the Springfield Armor (6-15), presented by MGM Springfield, 65-52 in the second half for a 118-105 victory Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center.

Darius Johnson-Odom led Springfield through a closely-played first quarter with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting, but five free throws and a 61.9 shooting percentage put Canton in front 31-30 after one period. Despite being outrebounded 10-9, Springfield used a 10-4 edge in second chance points to keep the deficit at just one.

Jeff Foote scored six of the Armor's 23 second-quarter points, entering the half a perfect 6-of-6 from the field for a game-high 15, but it was Johnson-Odom's fade away jumper just before the buzzer that knotted the game at 53 apiece. The Armor were able to grab a four-point lead during the first 24 minutes, but the seventh and final draw of the half sent both teams into the locker room tied.

Along with Foote' 15, Johnson-Odom also entered the half with double figures, tallying 13 on a 6-of-13 effort from the floor. Larry Anderson scored eight off the bench, but Springfield was able to connect on just 1-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc and 8-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Gilbert Brown paced the Charge with 12 points, while Jorge Gutierrez added 11 to go along with five assists. Canton used three treys and an 8-of-10 mark from the foul line to stretch its lead as large as five in the first half, but the two teams remained within a single possession of each other over the final three minutes.

After the Armor took a 65-64 lead in the third, the Charge responded on a 7-0 run that helped Canton open up a 71-65 edge, its largest of the game to that point. Springfield closed the gap to two moments later, but the Charge put together another 7-0 run that put Canton in front 78-69. Canton stretched its lead as high as 13, but the Armor were able to trim the deficit to single digits by the end of the frame courtesy of another late basket that left Springfield trailing by just eight entering the fourth, 85-77.

Springfield pulled within five with less than seven minutes to play, but Canton's Olek Czyz connected on nine points over the final half of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Czyz finished with 17, while Brown's 25 led the Charge to their 13th victory of the season, knocking off the Armor 118-105 to salvage a split in the weekend set.

Johnson-Odom posted 26 points to go along with a team-best five assists on the afternoon. Foote tied his season-high with 16 points and put together his second double-double with 10 boards. For the fifth straight game, six or more Armor members reached double figures as seven Springfield players eclipsed the 10-point mark, including all five starters.

Springfield now travels to Erie, Pennsylvania for a Thursday tilt with the BayHawks before returning home to face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Friday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. inside the MassMutual Center for 'Paint it Pink Night.' Friday will featuring an on-court recognition of breast cancer survivors as well as an auction that includes one-of-a-kind memorabilia from both the Armor and Brooklyn Nets to go along with a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds benefitting Rays of Hope.
